Final Stats
OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University volleyball team made it a weekend sweep Saturday with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-11) victory over Akron. Cassie Farrell led the RedHawks with 12 kills in the match. Miami improves to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Akron is 3-14 overall and 0-4 in the MAC.
Two kills each from Farrell and Christina Menche helped lead Miami to a 7-2 lead to begin set one. A 7-4 run by Akron would cut the deficit to two at 9-11, but the RedHawks would respond with their own 5-1 run to push it back to six at 16-10. Lisa Treadway would score two kills, but the Zips would eventually tie the score at 22. They then took the next point to take the lead and force a Miami timeout. After the break, Menche would score a kill off of Kendall's assist to retie the set. An attack error by Akron followed, and Menche recorded another kill to give Miami a 25-23 win.
Farrell was dominant early in set two, recording three kills. In front, 8-7, Miami would go on a 9-4 run to push the lead to six at 17-11. Akron would respond with its own 5-2 run to pull within three at 16-19, but the RedHawks recovered with a kill by Meg Riley and a block by Jenn Caylor and Menche. In front, 23-17, a block by Menche and Amy Raseman would create set point. The Zips would fight it off by scoring the next three points, but the Red and White would earn a 25-20 victory when Treadway and Menche teamed up on another block.
Tied at three in the third set, Miami took control with an 8-0 run. During that stretch, Farrell had two kills, while Treadway, Caylor and Madison Dodd also contributed to the attack. The advantage would never drop below seven after that, and with the score 14-7, a 5-0 run featuring two kills by Raseman and a service ace by Riley put the set out of reach. Miami would eventually capture a 25-11 win with Chelsea Visk putting down the winning kill.
The RedHawks hit .373 for the match, their second-best hitting percentage of the season. They held the Zips to a .134 hitting percentage. Farrell had an individual hitting percentage of .647 in recording her 12 kills. Raseman had 10 kills with a .526 hitting percentage. Madison Hardy led the way with 16 digs, while Menche had seven kills and five blocks. Kendall led Miami with 20 assists.
The RedHawks return to action on Thursday when they travel to Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. match.
