RedHawks Finish Fourth at BGSU Challenge

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Three RedHawks earned individual victories Saturday to lead the Miami University women's track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the BGSU Team Challenge, hosted by Bowling Green at Perry Field House.
The RedHawks totaled 112 points, finishing just six points behind the host Falcons, who took third. Miami was third among the four Mid-American Conference schools at the meet as Western Michigan won the meet with 168 points while Ball State was fifth with 58 points. Dayton was the runner-up with 148 points.
"It was hard to be excited when so many of our girls weren't competing in their normal events but we are better than we were a year ago," head coach Kelly Phillips said. "We will be much more excited and ready to go after the All-Ohio Championships next week."
Senior Hope Alexander (Wilmington, Del.) won the triple jump with a leap of 11.28m/37-0.25, winning by over two and a half inches, while junior Jillian Dickman (Madison, Ohio) claimed the mile run title in a personal-best time of 5:03.66. Sophomore Katie Scannell (Cortland, Ohio) was Miami's other winner, taking first in the 500m run in 1:16.09 while junior Caroline Kwateng (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took fourth in the race in 1:20.75.
Three 'Hawks also earned runner-up honors, as junior Diona Graves (Fenton, Mo.) was second in the 60m dash in 7.69 seconds while freshman Ariel Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Scannell also made the finals, taking sixth and seventh place, respectively. Sophomore Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was second in the 60m hurdles in 8.93 ticks while redshirt freshman Ashley Zaper (Whitehouse, Ohio) and true freshmen Erica Mudd (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Xerina Hughey (Galloway, Ohio) all made the finals as the three placed fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
Miami's other's second-place finisher was senior Katie Lenahan (Cincinnati, Ohio), as she did so in the 800m run in 2:14.85. Junior Rachel Patterson (Rochester, Mich.) claimed third place in the 3000m run in 9:50.55 while junior Maggie Bingham (Carmel, Ind.) was 11 ticks behind in fourth in a personal-best 10:01.81.
Freshman Kori Tatman (Amanda, Ohio) continued to impress in her rookie season as she placed fifth in the pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 3.50m/11-5.75, tying her for fifth in school history. Junior Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 16.35m/53-7.75 and placed eighth in the shot put as Miami's lone thrower at the meet. Senior Magda Wikar (Winnetka, Ill.) also placed sixth in the long jump for the 'Hawks with a leap of 5.37m/17-7.5.
In the day's lone relay, Miami took fourth in the 4x400m in 3:57.41 as the Broncos captured the top two spots with their "A" and "B" relay teams.
The RedHawks return to action next weekend at the All-Ohio Championships, hosted by Kent State, Jan. 21-22 in Kent, Ohio.
