IOWA CITY, Iowa - The amazing start to the Miami field hockey season continued on Sunday, and this time a nationally ranked team became one of its victims as the RedHawks downed 19th-ranked Iowa, 5-1. Five different players scored for Miami, which improved to 5-0 on the season. The Hawkeyes, which started the season last week dropping close matches to two top five opponents, fell to 0-3.
The 5-0 start matches the 1980 and 1982 teams for the longest win streak to begin a season. The 1978 team (only the second team in school history), holds the record with an 8-0 start.
"We played a great game," said head coach Jill Reeve. "The team really played together and had some awesome passing throughout the game. It was a team victory today."
Jackie Nguyen got things started for the RedHawks with her eighth goal of the season in the sixth minute. In the 13th minute, Kate Snyder sent a hard shot that the Iowa goalie was able to get a pad on. Undaunted, the rebound came right back to her and Snyder quickly sent the ball into the net for her fourth goal of the season. During the first half Miami held the Hawkeyes to only two shots, neither of which were on net, and it went into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
Early in the second half, Mary Hull got in behind the defense and slammed in her shot to make it 3-0 in favor of the RedHawks. Iowa responded with a goal of its own in the 47th minute. Kylie Landeros would make sure that any hopes the Hawkeyes had of completing the comeback were stuffed when she scored her second career goal in the 58th minute off a deflection of a Christine Brightwell shot. Emily Gruesser completed the scoring with her first career goal in the 66th minute of play.
"While everybody had a hand in this win, we had a couple of outstanding individual efforts," Reeve reports. "Kylie Landeros and Brittany Branco were outstanding in leading our defense and limiting the offensive chances of a very good team. Up front Emily Gruesser was great and I was proud to see her get her first goal, while Kate Snyder picked up where she left off yesterday to complete an outstanding weekend."
For the game Miami outshot Iowa, 13-9. The RedHawk defense was once again strong in front of starting goalkeeper Sarah Mueller, holding the Hawkeyes to only two shots on net. This was despite Iowa holding a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.
After starting the season with five games in its first 10 days, Miami will get 12 days off to rest of its next game. The RedHawks will welcome 17th-ranked Indiana to the Miami Field Hockey Complex for their home opener on Friday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m.
