BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the first time in the 2010-11 season, a Miami RedHawk team was in action as the field hockey team played an exhibition game against Indiana on Wednesday. The teams played three 25 minute halves, one 10 minute 7-on-7 overtime period and concluded with a penalty stroke contest. After dropping the first half, 3-1, Miami tied the Hoosiers 1-1 in the second period and 2-2 in the third period. The two teams went scoreless in the overtime frame, while the RedHawks won the penalty strokes competition, 3-0.
"I thought our team grew throughout the scrimmage," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I thought it was useful as it exposed some of our weaknesses and what we still need to cover. It is still very early in the preseason and we have yet to cover some of those things. It was a good early test for us, Indiana is a good team."
Senior Christine Brightwell led the RedHawk offense with two goals. Senior Kate Snyder and junior Amanda Seeley each also scored during the scrimmage.
Miami begins the regular season on Friday, Aug. 27 when it travels to Berkeley, Calif. to take on the Cal Golden Bears at 8 p.m. (EDT).
