FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - The awards continue to roll in for Miami University senior Carter Camper, as the captain of the RedHawks' hockey team was named the Hockey Commissioners' Association National Division I Player of the Month for October, the HCA announced Thursday. He is the first RedHawk to claim National Player of the Month since Matt Christie in October of 2004.
The Rocky River, Ohio, native became eligible for the accolade after being named RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month Tuesday, his second career CCHA Player of the Month award. The winner of each of the five Division I college hockey conference's Player of the Month are put up for the national award with the leagues' commissioners choosing the National Player of the Month.
Camper has been on a tear since the regular season began Oct. 8 as he leads the nation in goals (9) and points (22) and is tied for the lead nationally in assists with 13 in just eight games. The RedHawk captain has scored a goal in all but one game and has recorded multiple points in seven of his eight games as well while notching at least one point in every game this season. He also has two multi-goal games (Oct. 8 vs. New Hampshire and Oct. 15 at St. Cloud State) and five games of three or more points this month.
Camper has moved into a tie for eighth on Miami's career points list this month with 148 and is now also tied for the national lead in career points among active players. The Rocky River, Ohio, native tallied a career-high five assists, one shy of the school record, and career-best five points Oct. 23 vs. Northern Michigan. In addition to reaching Miami's top 10 in points, he now also ranks in Miami's career top 10 in assists, power-play goals and game-winning goals, with two power-play goals and a pair of game-winning goals each this month. He is a team-best +13 on the year.
Camper has led Miami to a No. 1 ranking nationally, a 5-1-2 record and a 3-0-1-1 start in league play, which has the 'Hawks in first place. He was named CCHA Offensive Player of the Week Oct. 18 after a three-goal, four-point weekend at St. Cloud State Oct. 15-16.
Camper and the top-ranked RedHawks return to the ice this weekend as they travel to Ferris State for a pair of games Nov. 5-6.
