OXFORD, Ohio - The volleyball team had a successful Senior Night as it swept Bowling Green in straight sets, 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-21). Miami improves to 10-16 overall and 5-8 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons fall to 8-20 overall and 2-11 in the MAC.
Bowling Green raced to a 10-2 lead to begin set one. Cassie Farrell had three kills, while Colleen Loftus contributed two as the RedHawks fought back to pull within two at 12-14. The Falcons would answer with a 5-2 run that put the advantage back at five. Trailing 16-20, Loftus recorded two kills, while senior Michelle Mangia had a service act to spark a 6-1 run that gave Miami the lead at 22-21. Bowling Green scored the next three points to create set point at 24-22. A kill from Jenn Caylor and a block by senior Michele Metzler ended that threat and retied the set at 24. Tied at 25, kills from Metzler and Amy Raseman would give the RedHawks the 27-25 win.
Metzler's strong serve led to an ace and two Raseman kills as Miami opened up a 7-2 lead in set two. Metzler would contribute two more kills as the RedHawks maintained the lead until it was 16-11. Two blocks from Farrell were part of a 4-1 run that helped put the set out of reach at 20-12. Miami would cruise from there and earn a 25-17 victory.
Loftus put down three kills, while Metzler and Farrell each contributed two as Miami went in front 17-8 in set three. The Falcons did not give up and went on a 10-1 run that tied the set at 18 and forced a RedHawk timeout. After the break, a ball handling error by BG and two kills from Loftus put Miami back in front, 21-18. Leading 23-21, Christina Menche scored two straight kills to give the RedHawks a 25-21 win and end the match.
Metzler and Loftus led Miami with 10 kills apiece. Farrell had eight kills and a team high seven blocks (two solo five assisted). Jackie Lang led the RedHawks with 10 digs. Miami hit .245 for the match, while Bowling Green hit .252.
The RedHawks will next travel to Western Michigan on Saturday for a 7 p.m. match against the Broncos.
