KENT, Ohio - The RedHawk volleyball team took the first set, but Kent State responded by taking the next three to capture a 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-18) win over Miami on Saturday night. The RedHawks fall to 10-19 overall and finish 5-11 in the Mid-American Conference. The Golden Flashes improve to 13-18 overall and 6-10 in the MAC.
Miami will now be the 11th seed in next week's MAC Tournament. The RedHawks will hit the road for their first round match next Tuesday at sixth seed Central Michigan. The time of the match is 7 p.m.
Two kills from Amy Raseman and a service ace by Amy Kendall were part of a 7-3 start by Miami in set one. Kent State would close to within one at 10-11, but that is when the RedHawks made their move to take control of the set. Miami would go on an 8-1 run that opened up a 19-11 lead. The Golden Flashes would respond with a 9-3 run of their own to pull within two at 20-22. However, two kills from Colleen Loftus followed by a double block from Madison Dodd and Michele Metzler would give the RedHawks the three final points they needed for the 25-20 victory.
Trailing 4-8 in set two, Miami would respond with an 11-7 run that would tie the score at 15. During that run, Raseman recorded three kills. Kent State would eventually retake the lead with an 8-4 spurt that made it 23-19. That would prove to be enough as the Golden Flashes went on to win, 25-20.
Set three started well for the RedHawks as kills from Metzler, Loftus and Lisa Treadway helped stake Miami to a 5-3 lead. From there, Kent State would score 14 of the next 16 points to take control of the set at 17-7. Loftus, Metzler and Cassie Farrell would each follow with kills, but they could not make a dent in the lead as the Golden Flashes won, 25-12.
Kent State opened up a 13-9 advantage to start set four. A Golden Flash service error, followed by a kill and a solo block from Metzler pulled Miami to within one at 12-13. The teams traded points until it was 17-15 in favor of the Golden Flashes. Kent State would then close out the set and the match by going on an 8-3 run that gave it a 25-17 victory.
Loftus, Metzler and Raseman each finished with 10 kills for Miami. Metzler also had five blocks (two solo, three assisted). Madison Hardy led the defense with 10 digs, while Kendall had 26 assists.
