ATHENS, Ohio - The Miami volleyball team dropped a match to Ohio in three tough sets (20-25, 17-25, 24-26) on Friday night. The RedHawks fall to 10-18 overall and 5-10 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats clinch the East Division title and improve to 17-11 overall and 9-6 in the MAC.
Ohio scored the first seven points of the first set. Miami would respond with one of its biggest runs of the season, outscoring the Bobcats 15-2 to take a 15-11 lead. During the run, Michele Metzler had three kills, while Cassie Farrell had one kill and two blocks. Ohio took the next four points to tie the set at 15. Tied at 18, a 4-1 run gave the Bobcats a 22-19 lead. A Colleen Loftus kill off of an Amy Kendall assist closed the RedHawks to within two, but Ohio won the next three points to earn a 25-20 victory.
A 16-7 start gave the Bobcats control of set two. Kills from Kayleigh Cox and Amy Raseman helped keep Miami in the contest, but the early jump by Ohio proved to be too much as the Bobcats took a 25-17 win. Tied at seven in set three, two kills each by Farrell and Madison Dodd helped put Miami in front, 14-11.
Two kills from Loftus were part of a 6-2 run by the RedHawks that extended the advantage to 20-13. A 10-3 run by Ohio pulled the Bobcats to within one at 22-23, but Farrell responded with the kill to create set point for Miami at 24-22. Unfortunately for the RedHawks, Ohio was able to answer with its own 4-0 run to steal the third set and the match, 26-24.
Farrell led Miami with eight kills, hitting .583 for the match. Madison Hardy, Lisa Treadway and Michelle Mangia tied for the team lead with six digs each. Dodd recorded a career high five block assists.
The RedHawks conclude the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Kent State for a 7 p.m. match. Miami can still earn a home match for the first round of the MAC Tournament with a victory and a Toledo win over Buffalo on Saturday.
