MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - A strong offensive hitting percentage of .330 from Central Michigan proved to be enough to overcome the Miami volleyball team in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-18) decision Saturday night. The RedHawks fall to 7-14 overall and 2-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas improve to 9-11 overall and 3-5 in the MAC.
Jenn Caylor and Colleen Loftus had two kills each early on as the teams found themselves tied at 10 in set one. An 8-3 run by CMU put the Chippewas in front, 18-13. Caylor and Amy Raseman would each put down kills off Michelle Mangia assists, but the RedHawks still found themselves trailing, 19-23, late. On the next four points there was a double-block from Mangia and Michele Metzler, a setting error by Central, a kill from Loftus and a service ace by Mangia that tied the set at 23. Unfortunately for Miami, the Chippewas would answer with the next two points to earn a 25-23 win.
Two kills by Metzler helped Miami to a 7-4 lead in set two. The RedHawks would maintain that lead as Raseman, Caylor and Cassie Farrell each spiked down kills. The key run for CMU came with Miami in front, 12-9. The Chippewas would respond with a 12-5 run to take a 21-17 lead. Despite two more kills each from Metzler and Loftus, CMU would hold on to win, 25-21.
Set three was competitive to start as both teams stayed within two points of each other early on. Loftus contributed three kills, while Caylor put down two, the last of which gave Miami a 14-13 lead. From there an 8-1 run by the Chippewas would put them in front, 21-15. That advantage would hold as CMU took the match with a 25-18 victory.
Loftus and Caylor led the way for Miami with nine kills apiece. Loftus was also tied with Madison Hardy for the team lead in digs at nine. Mangia recorded 20 assists and assisted on three blocks.
Miami will host two matches next weekend during the homecoming festivities. The RedHawks will take on Ball State on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. A match with Toledo will follow on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m.
