Final Stats
YPSILANTI, Mich. - In a hard fought close battle the Miami volleyball team fell, 1-3 (19-25, 25-23, 20-25, 18-25) Friday night in Ypsilanti. Colleen Loftus recorded her third consecutive double-double with 11 kills and 18 digs in the match. Miami falls to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles improve to 18-6 overall and 5-2 in the MAC.
Miami scored the first two points of the match off an EMU attack error and a service ace by Amy Kendall. A 13-7 run by the Eagles gave Eastern a four point lead and forced a RedHawk timeout. Loftus and Cassie Farrell responded out of the break with two kills apiece to help Miami tie the score at 16. The RedHawks would regain the lead on the next point when Lisa Treadway would put down an ace. However, the Eagles would follow that with a 9-2 run to close out the set and earn a 25-19 win.
Set two did not start out well for Miami as the team fell behind, 8-14. Jenn Caylor recorded two kills and teamed up with Farrell on a block to help the RedHawks slowly pull back into it. Trailing 17-19, Michele Metzler and Amy Raseman scored the double block to bring Miami to within one. EMU scored three of the next four points to increase the margin to 22-19. The RedHawks followed with three kills from Farrell and one from Michelle Mangia to take the lead in the set for the first time. After an Eagle kill retied the score, Caylor recorded a kill of her own off a Mangia assist, and Eastern Michigan was forced into an attack error to give Miami a 25-23 victory.
Tied at seven in the third set, a 12-8 run by EMU would give the Eagles a 19-15 lead. Once again Miami would fight back into it. Two kills from Metzler along with kills from Loftus and Caylor were part of a 4-1 run that pulled Miami to within one at 19-20. Unfortunately that would be as close as the Red and White would get as EMU won five of the next six points to take set three, 25-20.
Two kills from Mangia, one from Metzler and a service ace by Jackie Lang gave Miami a 7-3 lead in set four. Mangia continued the attack with two more kills, along with teaming up on a block with Farrell to help the RedHawks maintain the advantage at 12-9. From there, a 5-1 run gave the Eagles a 15-13 lead. A service ace by Metzler and two kills from Caylor were part of a 4-2 answer by Miami that tied the set at 17. The RedHawk attack would go cold at that point as Eastern finished the set and the match on an 8-1 run to win, 25-18.
Loftus was only one off her career high with those 18 digs. Metzler led the way offensive with 13 kills. Treadway led defensively with 21 digs. As a team, the RedHawks recorded 78 digs. Miami hit .256 for the match, compared to .297 for Eastern Michigan.
Miami completes its two game road trip Saturday with a 7 p.m. match at Central Michigan.
