MUNCIE, Ind. - The Miami field hockey team won its second straight game Friday with a 2-0 victory over Ball State. The RedHawks improve to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals fall to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the MAC.
"I think we started a little slow out of the gate, but we played our way into what turned into an evenly fought match," said head coach Jill Reeve.
It was a defensive game throughout as both teams struggled to generate offensive chances. Miami was able to score on its first shot on goal in the 17th minute when Jackie Nguyen tapped in a Mary Hull pass from across the net. For Nguyen it was her ninth goal of the season.
The RedHawks would get some insurance with another goal in the 30th minute. In a similar play to the first goal, Hull found Emily Gruesser across the net and Gruesser put home the shot from close range for her second goal of the season.
"Mary Hull had an absolutely outstanding day today," said Reeve.
That would be all Miami would need as Sarah Mueller was solid in goal the entire game. She made six saves as she earned her third shutout of the season.
For the game, Nguyen led the RedHawks with two shots on goal. The teams were even in overall shots at 10 apiece. Ball State had the penalty corner advantage at 7-4.
Miami returns home Sunday to take on Missouri State in MAC action at noon.
