RedHawks Drop a Hard Fought Match to Wildcats

Sept. 13, 2009

Final Stats

OXFORD, Ohio - In the final game of its home tournament hosted at the Miami Field Hockey Complex, the RedHawks fell in a close match to the Northwestern Wildcats 3-2. Miami is now 1-4 on the season while the Wildcats advance to 6-2 after defeating Central Michigan yesterday as well.

The Wildcats shot out to an early lead with their first goal coming 2:53 into the first half off the stick of Chelsea Armstrong with the assist by Sarah Marcincin. The RedHawks responded quickly when senior Mary Hull was able to beat the goalie off a pass from junior Christine Brightwell at 9:09.

Northwestern answered shortly after with two goals within five minutes of each other. The first came from Marcincin off Regan Mooney with the next from Armstrong off Elizabeth Dobbs, at 14:01 and 18:59, respectively.

Miami returned with a strong start to the second half, keeping the Wildcats on the defensive for the opening minutes of play. The RedHawks' Hull was able to capitalize on the team's first shot of the half with a goal at 37:54.

Despite an intense rest of the period, which included several cards being issued to both sides, neither team was able to score again, leaving Northwestern with the win.

"I was very impressed with the level of play, and it was an unfortunate outcome," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We played a solid 55 minutes I would say, but we started sluggish and waited too long to step into our game. It's hard to come back from that kind of deficit, but we were very evenly matched."

Miami will continue its home stint when they face the Ball State Cardinals this Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Miami Field Hockey Complex.
