RedHawk Baseball Team Drops 6-1 Decision at Kent State

May 15, 2009

Box Score

KENT, Ohio -Miami University's baseball team (28-22; 15-11 Mid-American Conference) was unable to get much going offensively as the RedHawks fell to the Kent State Golden Flashes (37-15; 16-9 MAC) on Friday afternoon in the second game of the weekend series, 6-1.

The RedHawks got on the board first in the top of the second inning. After Chris Nadeau (Saline, Mich.) doubled and moved to third on a Brad Gschwind (Cincinnati, Ohio) bunt single, a double play allowed Nadeau to score and put the RedHawks on top 1-0. The single by Gschwind extended the sophomore shortstop's hitting streak to 14 games.

Kent State struck back in the bottom of the second inning with an unearned run off Miami starter Tyler Melling (Bellefontaine, Ohio) to even the score at 1-1. With runners on the corner, Melling was able to fight out of the jam by notching his third strikeout of the game and leave two runners stranded.

In the third inning, sophomore right fielder Adam Eaton (Springfield, Ohio) recorded his 25th successful steal of the season, and his 30th straight dating back to last season. He reached base initially via a single, marking the 48th time in 49 games this season that Eaton has reached base safely.

The Golden Flashes gained the lead for good in the fourth inning as they exploded for four runs - keyed by a Jimmy Rider three-run home run - to take a 5-1 advantage. Miami hitters would struggle over the next few innings, tallying only one hit over the next three innings. Kent State extended its lead in the bottom of the seventh, plating a run on an RBI single that pushed the lead to 6-1.

Neither team would score for the remainder of the game as Kent State took game two of the three-game series.

Five different RedHawks would each tally one hit against two tough Kent State pitchers.

The RedHawks and Golden Flashes are scheduled to finish the series at Schoonover Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday for the final game of the 2009 regular season.
