HUNTINGTON, W.V. - The Miami softball team split its non-conference doubleheader Tuesday with former Mid-American Conference rival Marshall. The RedHawks defeated the Thundering Herd 8-6 in game one, before falling 10-1 in five innings in the nightcap. Miami is now 22-17 on the season, while Marshall is 23-13.
The big inning in game one for the RedHawks came in the top of the second when Miami put seven runs on the board. The scoring began when Alicia Hogl came home from second base on a throwing error by the catcher. Jordan McElroy brought in a run the hard way when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The next batter, Ashley Gartland, made it 3-0 when she hit into a fielder's choice groundout.
Alexis Javier continued the Miami offensive attack when she scored on a wild pitch. Sarah Billstrom doubled to score Gartland, while Jenna McGivney capped the scoring with a two-run home run, her third of the season.
Marshall was able to come back with two runs in the bottom of the second and four more in the bottom of the third to make it 7-6. Starting pitcher Jessica Simpson settled down from there, holding the Thundering Herd off the board for the rest of the game. Lauren Odom gave the RedHawks some insurance with her first career home run, a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning.
McGivney finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Simpson pitched a complete game giving up four earned runs on nine hits while earning her 16th victory of the season.
Game two started off on a bad note for Miami as Marshall was able to score seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. It was able to add three more in the bottom of the third to allow the game to end after five innings due to the run rule. The RedHawks scored their run in the top of the fourth when Hogl singled to score McElroy.
As part of the Spring Sports Extravaganza this weekend, Miami will host Western Michigan for a Friday doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The RedHawks will then host Northern Illinois for single games on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
