OXFORD, Ohio--For the third straight game, Miami University's baseball team (11-10; 2-3 Mid-American Conference) amassed double figures in runs as the RedHawks downed Eastern Michigan (4-20; 0-5 MAC) 12-2 in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday evening.
The third game of the series has been moved to noon on Saturday, March 28.
Sophomore pitcher Tyler Melling moved to 2-0 on the season, pitching 5.1 innings. Melling gave up two runs off four hits and struck out four. Junior pitcher Jamaal Hollis threw three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief, while junior hurler Chase Stewart threw the final inning to preserve the win.
Six RedHawks had multiple-hit games. Senior left fielder Chris Nadeau led the Red and White at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one run and one RBI, while senior third baseman Jordan Petraitis went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs in the winning effort.
Miami got on the board first, doing so in the second inning when senior second baseman Jon Edgington doubled to left center to send sophomore shortstop Brad Gschwind home to hand Miami a 1-0 lead.
Like it has done so many times in its last three games, Miami used another big-run inning to catapult itself to a sizable advantage. The RedHawks scored five runs off five hits in the bottom of the third to jump to a 6-0 lead. Two of MU's five hits were extra-base hits, including a two-RBI double by junior designated hitter Zak Hatfield to plate senior first baseman Tommy Nurre and Nadeau.
After a sophomore right fielder Adam Eaton double in the bottom of the fourth inning, Petraitis stepped to the plate and drilled a single through the left side to score Eaton and up the RedHawk lead to 7-0.
Eastern Michigan scored its first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when Andrew Marshall hit a home run over the leftfield fence to make the score 7-1 in favor of the RedHawks. Miami added two more runs in the bottom of the inning when freshman center fielder Ryan Curl singled to right field to plate senior catcher Eric Darlage and Eaton hit a sacrifice fly to score Gschwind to up the RedHawk advantage to 9-1.
The Eagles scored their second run in the top of the sixth inning of an Aaron Powell RBI single up the middle to score Aaron Crooks to pull within seven runs, 9-2.
Neither team scored until the bottom of the eighth inning. Petraitis tripled to lead off the inning for the RedHawks. Nadeu singled to score Petraitis, while pinch runner freshman Ryan Brenner scored on a wild pitch and Darlage doubled to score Nurre to up the RedHawk advantage to 12-2.
The Eagles went three-up, three-down in the ninth on a solid pitching effort by Stewart.
