RedHawk Swimmers Host Final Meet

OXFORD, Ohio - The seniors of Miami University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be honored Friday evening (Feb. 6) when the RedHawks host Ball State at the Nixon Aquatic Center. The first event will begin at 7 p.m.
Nine men's and eight women's swimmers will conclude their home careers on Friday, including: all-time diving record holder Chris Heaton (Centerville); Alyson Schmidt (Maineville), the varsity record holder in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle; Allison Stevens (Laurel, MD), who owns the school's top mark in the 200 freestyle; and Malarie Schmidt (Batavia, IL), Miami's record holder in the 100 backstroke, the 200 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. The latter three swimmers also have been involved in all five of the existing relay records.
Coach Pete Lindsay's men are 1-1 in MAC competition, having lost at Eastern Michigan, 169-129, on January 31. They are 3-6 in overall dual meets. Individually, sophomore DARRIN SMITH (Bossier City, LA) had the men's top effort a week ago at EMU, winning the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200 backstroke. Freshman diver JIM BERES (Columbus) also sparkled, capturing victories in both the one- and three-meter events.
Seniors on the men's squad who will be honored include Jason Bank (Farmington Hills, MI), Brooks Cowan (Troy, MI), Justin Dankovich (Greenville, SC), Scott DuCharme (Rochester Hills, MI), Nick DuPuis (Atlanta, GA), Heaton, Davis Mello (Brentwood, TN), Andrew Neff (Chesterland, OH) and Zac Siegel (Wilmette, IL).
The men's MAC/Sun Belt Championships will be held Feb. 18-21 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Coach Dave Jennings's women, ranked No. 1 among Division I Mid-Major teams, have a 5-1 record in MAC meets and are 9-2 overall. Last week, the RedHawks lost a 157-131 decision at Eastern Michigan, breaking their nine-meet winning streak. Individual victors a week ago included: senior diver Melissa Roemmele (Lexington, KY) in both the one- and three-meter events; sophomore Kelsey Vehr (Cincinnati), winner of both the 100 and 200 breaststroke; and junior Kasey Carpenter (Cincinnati) in the 200 backstroke.
Seniors on the women's squad who will be saluted include Jenn Flaherty (Scarborough, ME), Maggie French (Dunwoody, GA), Paige Iversen (New Hope, PA), Tenley Marsteller (Erie, PA), Jennifer Nemeth (Highland Heights), Roemmele, Alyson Schmidt, Malarie Schmidt and Stevens.
The women's MAC Championships are Feb. 25-28 at Bowling Green.
LOOKING AT BALL STATE: On the men's side, the Cardinals return to the pool for the first time since January 24. Ball State is 1-3 overall and 0-2 in MAC competition. Last season, the Cardinals suffered a narrow 163-136 setback to the RedHawks at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. Junior Ben Battjes enters the week as one of the league's top freestyle sprinters, ranking second in the conference in the 50 freestyle (20.94) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (46.25.) Senior Kyle Hembree is BSU's top distance swimmer, ranking fifth in the league in both the 1000 freestyle (9:55.55) and 1650 freestyle (16:25.55). In the backstroke, Adam Thieling tops BSU and ranks third in the MAC in the 100 at 51.64, while Dale owns a team best 200 time of 1:52.41 to rank fourth in the conference. Jordan Rantz is BSU's top breaststroker, ranking fourth in the MAC in the 100 (58.83) and seventh in the 200 (2:11.05). On the women's side, BSU enters the contest with an overall record of 2-6 (1-5 MAC. Last season, the Cardinals scored a 176-124 home victory over the RedHawks to conclude the regular season. Junior Mary Ehresman leads the Cardinals and ranks 15th in the league in the 1000 freestyle at 10:29.76, while ranking 17th in the 1650 freestyle at 17:40.41. Freshman Emily Haifley is BSU's top-ranked female swimmer overall, holding the No. 3 time in the MAC in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.49) and the fourth-fastest clocking in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.13). Lisa Maertin is BSU's top diver, with NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks on the 1-meter (281.85) and 3-meter (282.00) boards to rank sixth and seventh in the league, respectively.
