OXFORD, Ohio - No. 7/9 Miami battled No. 15 Ohio State Friday night, but the RedHawks came up short in the final regular season finale by a final score of 6-2.
The RedHawks fell behind in the first period when a turnover led to an unassisted goal by Ohio State's Kyle Reed. Reed extended the Buckeye lead with his second goal of the night at 5:19 of the second period. Miami would not go quietly, and Brian Kaufman (Shorview, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal of his own at 8:39 of the second period to pull the RedHawks within one. The Red and White would even the score as Jarod Palmer (Fridley, Minn.) scored off a won faceoff by Pat Cannone (Bayport, N.Y.). Cannone won the draw and passed back to Palmer who fired a shot into the net to tie the game at two.
The advantage was short lived for the RedHawks as Sergio Somma scored 16 seconds later to help Ohio State retake the lead. The Buckeyes would score three more goals, one an empty net tally in the third period, to pick up their first win against Miami in Oxford since March, 4, 2004.
Miami and Ohio State will be back in action tomorrow as the RedHawks travel to Value City Arena to take on the Buckeyes at 7:05 p.m.
