Miami Hockey Post-Game Notes
Saturday, December 5, 2009
Oxford, Ohio - Steve Cady Arena at the Goggin Ice Center
No. 1/1 Miami vs. No. 15/14 Notre Dame
With the 4-0 win Saturday night combined with the 1-0 win Friday, the RedHawks recorded back-to-back shutouts for just the fourth time in school history and first time on the same weekend or against the same opponent. The other back-to-back shutouts came Jan. 19 and 25, 2008, Feb. 15 and 21, 2003 and Nov. 20 and Dec. 3, 1999.
Miami has now handed Notre Dame each of its last three shutouts--the two this weekend and Oct. 24, 2008, the last time the Irish were shutout prior to this weekend.
Sophomore goalie Connor Knapp made 18 saves Saturday to record his second shutout this season and fourth of his career. His other blanking this season came in the second game of the year against St. Cloud State on Oct. 10. It was Miami's fourth shutout of the season as a team as sophomore goalie Cody Reichard blanked the Irish last night and Western Michigan Nov. 20.
Miami improved to 9-0-0 when leading after two periods this season and 10-2-4 when outshooting its opponent, which they did, doubling up Notre Dame 36-18 in shots on goal. It was the 16th time in 18 games this year that Miami has outshot its opponent. The RedHawks are now 4-1-4 on Saturdays, 4-1-2 at home and 4-0-2 when scoring four or more goals.
The RedHawks now have four weekend sweeps this year, also sweeping St. Cloud State, Northern Michigan and Michigan. Miami has won each of the last six games against Notre Dame and controls the all-time series 34-15-8, including 17-7-2 in Oxford.
After going nine-for-nine on the penalty kill last night, Miami killed all seven of Notre Dame's power plays Saturday night, making them 16-for-16 on the penalty kill against the Irish this weekend. The RedHawks have killed 17 straight penalties now and are 56 for their last 60 on the penalty kill.
After going 0-for-7 on the power play Friday night, Miami scored its first goal Saturday on its first power play opportunity as junior captain Tommy Wingels stuck the puck in the net midway through the first period. It was Wingels' sixth goal of the year, which is second on the team, and his fifth in CCHA action, which leads the team. It was his second goal in three games and also turned out to be the game-winner, his third game-winning goal this season and sixth of his career.
Wingels' first-period tally was just Miami's second first-period goal at home this year (eight games) with the other coming in last night's contest against the Fighting Irish, which turned out to be the game-winner. In their first six home games, the RedHawks did not find the net in the opening period but have done so twice in their last two contests.
Sophomore defender Cameron Schilling earned an assist on Wingels' goal giving him three assists in his last four games. Junior Carter Camper picked up the other assist, his first helper in eight games. Schilling added two more assists in the third period for a career-high three assists. It marked his first multi-point game of the season and gave him a career-high three points.
Miami led 1-0 after one period marking the fourth straight home game the 'Hawks haven't given up a first-period goal. The last team to score on Miami in the opening period was Michigan State on Oct. 24, 2009.
The RedHawks scored their second goal also on the power play, as junior Pat Cannone scored early in the third period. It was his fourth goal of the year but first since Nov. 7 at Michigan (eight games). It was his second power play goal this season and ninth of his career.
Junior Carter Camper scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year (but just second in CCHA action) in the third period. It was his fifth goal in his last five games. With his assist from the first period, he tallied his fifth multi-point game of the season.
Miami scored two goals within 1:21 of each other late in the third period. Junior Justin Vaive scored the second of the two goals, just his third of the year (both of the others came Oct. 30 at Northern Michigan).
Miami's three third-period goals were the most it has scored in the third period this year. The 'Hawks have scored four goals in a period three times this year, each time coming in the second period (Oct. 16 and 17 at New Hampshire and Oct. 30 at Northern Michigan).
Miami scored two power-play goals in the same game for the first time since Oct. 31, 2009 at Northern Michigan. Tonight was just the third time this year the RedHawks registered multiple power-play goals in the same game (the third was also at Northern Michigan Oct. 30).
The RedHawks claimed all three Perani Cup stars of the game: 1. Connor Knapp 2. Tommy Wingels 3. Carter Camper.
