Miami Hockey Post-game Notes
Friday, December 4, 2009
Oxford, Ohio - Cady Arena at the Goggin Ice Center
No. 1/1 Miami vs. No. 15/14 Notre Dame
Notre Dame fired the first five shots on goal of the game. Miami didn't put its first shot on goal until 6:39 into the first period when senior Jerod Palmer placed one on net. The Irish held an 8-1 edge in shots on goal until Miami went on the power play 7:36 into the contest and finished the period outshooting Notre Dame 12-1 to hold a 13-9 shots-on-goal edge after one period.
Freshman Joe Hartman's goal at 18:42 of the first period marked Miami's first first-period goal at home this year. The goal was scored short-handed, giving the RedHawks four short-handed goals this season, the most in the CCHA. It was Hartman's second short-handed goal this season and fourth overall. Both of his short-handed goals have come in the final two minutes of a period. His other short-handed tally came Nov. 13 vs. Ferris State when he scored with one second left in the second period. All four of Miami's short-handed goals have come in its last seven games.
Hartman's goal turned out to be the game-winner, giving him his first-career game-winning goal. He was named the No. 2 star of the game, as his teammate, sophomore goalie Cody Reichard, was the No. 1 Perani Cup star of the game. Notre Dame goalie Mike Johnson was the third star of the game.
Junior Carter Camper earned a penalty shot 2:09 into the second period while Miami was short-handed after being taken down on a breakaway, but Notre Dame freshman goalie Mike Johnson made the save. It was the RedHawks' first penalty shot since Camper earned one Jan. 18, 2008 against Lake Superior State, which he converted.
Miami was held scoreless in the second period for just the sixth time this year. The RedHawks have scored 24 goals in the second period this year, the most goals they have scored in any of the three periods.
With the 1-0 victory, Miami recorded its third shutout of the season and second in CCHA action. Miami's other shutouts this season were a 2-0 win over St. Cloud State Oct. 10 and a 3-0 win at Western Michigan Nov. 20. Sophomore goalie Cody Reichard earned his second shutout in net this year (he also earned the shutout at WMU). He now has four in his career, and has already matched his shutout total from his freshman campaign.
Miami was a perfect nine-for-nine on the penalty kill Friday night against Notre Dame, topping its previous season-best effort of eight-for-eight on the penalty kill Nov. 7 at Michigan. The 'Hawks are now 88-of-100 on the penalty kill this season.
The RedHawks racked up a season-high 47 penalty minutes, including a 10-minute misconduct to sophomore Matt Tomassoni and a game-misconduct to senior Tommy Wingels (counted as 10 minutes toward Miami's total), Friday night on 14 penalties, just one shy of the 15 Miami was given Nov. 7 at Michigan. The RedHawks' previous season high in penalty minutes was just 30 that same game against the Wolverines.
Junior Tommy Wingels was given a game misconduct at the end of the first period for checking from behind.
With the win, Miami has now beaten Notre Dame five straight times. The RedHawks continue to lead the all-time series with the win, 33-15-8, including a 16-7-2 mark in Oxford. It was the teams' first meeting in Oxford since Nov. 9-10, 2007. Miami head coach Enrico Blasi is now 16-8-5 against the Irish behind the bench of the RedHawks.
Miami improved to 5-2 in one-goal games this year with the 1-0 win, its first 1-0 score this season. The one goal tied Miami's season low (11/14 vs. Ferris State and 11/21 at Western Michigan, both ties), as the RedHawks have not been shutout in any of their 17 games this season. Notre Dame's freshman goaltender, Mike Johnson, entered the game leading the NCAA in goals-against average and save percentage for the season.
Miami is now 8-0-0 when leading after two periods this year.
The RedHawks wore special Bicentennial jerseys for Friday night's contest against the Irish. Miami is also scheduled to wear the alternate jerseys Saturday night, as well.
Juniors Tommy Wingels and Pat Cannone each played in their 100th career game as a RedHawk Friday night. Seniors Jarod Palmer and Gary Steffes are the only other RedHawks with triple-digit appearances.
