AKRON, Ohio - The Miami volleyball team went ahead early and cruised to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-16) victory over Akron in Mid-American Conference play Friday night. The RedHawks improve to 13-10 overall and 8-3 in the MAC. The Zips fall to 12-13 and 3-8 in the MAC.
Two early kills from Jenn Caylor helped stake Miami to a 10-4 lead in set one. Hallie Hanks and Colleen Loftus took over from there, with Loftus providing four kills and Hanks recording two of her own as the RedHawks increased their lead to 22-12. Akron closed it to within seven at 17-24 after a 5-2 run, but Megan Griffin won the set on the next point, putting down the kill from Andrea Atteberry.
With the RedHawk in front, 8-7, in set two, a 10-2 run pushed the advantage to nine at 18-9. Loftus scored two more kills during that streak, while both Atteberry and Maria Leahy put down service aces. The Zips did not give up however, and a 10-1 run of their own tied the score at 19. Kills by Griffin and Hanks helped restart the RedHawk attack, and Miami closed out the 25-22 victory on a Leahy kill.
Set three became the Hanks show as she scored eight kills during the frame. Five kills from her helped the RedHawks turn a 4-4 tie into a 15-8 lead. With the RedHawks ahead 19-13, another Hanks kill sparked a 5-2 run that gave Miami match point at 24-15. Two points later, Hanks fittingly gave the Red and White the 25-16 win with the final kill off a Lisa Treadway assist.
Hanks finished the match with 16 kills, which was a season high and only one off of her career high of 17 set on Nov. 24, 2006 against Fairfield. She hit .321 for the match. Loftus and Griffin each recorded six kills for the RedHawks. Treadway was the leader with 11 digs, while Atteberry had 33 assists. As a team, Miami hit .312, compared to .118 for the Zips.
Miami concludes its road trip on Saturday when it travels to Buffalo for a 5 p.m. match.
