BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Miami RedHawks volleyball team was challenged Thursday night by Bowling Green in the first two sets, but was able to come away with a 3-0 (26-24, 28-26, 25-13) win. Miami improves to 8-7 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons are 7-10 overall and 0-3 in the MAC.
The RedHawks got off to a quick start in the first set, scoring the first four points off two kills from Hallie Hanks, along with kills from Jenn Caylor and Cassie Farrell. Hanks continued to attack with two more kills as Miami extended the lead to 10-3. Bowling Green followed with a 12-5 run to tie the set at 15. The RedHawks went ahead 23-17 off an 8-2 run, but the Falcons answered again with a 7-1 run to tie the score at 24. Amy Raseman and Caylor then followed with back-to-back kills to give Miami the 26-24 win.
Bowling Green opened set two with a 4-1 lead, but the RedHawks quickly tied the score off kills from Raseman, Hanks and Maria Leahy. The teams traded points until the score was tied at 15 all. Miami built the lead as big as three at 23-20, but the Falcons rallied to tie the score at 24. Bowling Green had two set points after that, but thanks to kills from Hanks and Megan Griffin, the RedHawks were able to fight them off. With the score tied at 26, Miami won the set off a block by Griffin and Andrea Atteberry, followed by a kill from Griffin off and Atteberry assist.
Ahead in the third set 14-10, the RedHawks were able to put the match out of reach for the Falcons with a 7-1 run that gave them a 21-11 lead. During the run Griffin recorded a kill and teamed up on a block with Leahy. Bowling Green scored the next two points to pull within eight, but Miami closed out the set with four consecutive points off a Christina Menche kill, a service ace from Griffin, a kill from Michele Metzler and a block from Metlzer and Atteberry.
Hanks led Miami with 13 kills, recording a .522 hitting percentage, while Griffin contributed 11 with a hitting percentage of .421. Leahy recorded nine digs and Atteberry had 39 assists. Miami hit .291 as a team and held Bowling Green to a .182 hitting percentage.
The RedHawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Northern Illinois for an 8 p.m. (EDT) match.
