KETTERING, Ohio - Saturday morning's Dayton 5K Challenge in Kettering marked the sixth-consecutive Miami RedHawk win and second-consecutive individual crown for senior Pat Sovacool.
The RedHawks took the team title with 33 points. The University of Cincinnati was second with 68, while Dayton and Xavier were third and fourth, respectively, with 86 and 95 points. Morehead State, IUPUI, Wright State and IPFW rounded out the team finishes.
"It was a good solid race across the board. The times were nice compared to last year. We had seven guys under-16 minutes, so we have some good depth," said 15th-year Miami head coach Warren Mandrell.
Sovacool won with a time of 15:22, just beating out Ron Duncan from Morehead State. Sovacool has finished in the top-10 in all four of his appearances at the 5K Challenge and in the top-3 the past three years.
Junior Kevin Silver was right behind Sovacool at 15:23 for third. Junior Paul Krebs was seventh at 15:42, while sophomore Michael Perry took 10th with a time of 15:47. Senior Brad Untrauer rounded out the Miami scoring with a 12th place finish and a time of 15:50.
The sixth-straight team crown came at an early time compared to recent years, explained Mandrell.
"We have had one less week than we usually have each year before our first meet, so our guys were a little less sharp at the finish."
Sophomore Robbie Fisher and sophomore Chris Dennison were right behind the Miami top-5, finishing 13th and 16th with times of 15:52 and 15:54, respectively.
Also posting times for Miami were junior Ryan Dezso at 16:08 (25th); sophomore Mike Fakler at 16:12 (31st); sophomore Adam Martin at 16:14 (33rd); and freshman Mitch Huesmann at 16:26 (43rd).
Overall, Mandrell was impressed with this early performance from his RedHawk squad. "This was a good start to the season," the Miami mentor ended.
The RedHawks will compete on Friday, Sept. 5, at the Great American Legends Race at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. The gun will sound at 4 p.m.
