YPSILANTI, Mich. -- As expected, Miami battled Eastern Michigan for the Mid-American Conference Men's Cross Country Championships Saturday, but the Eagles took advantage of the home course to edge the RedHawks, 42-56. Junior Kevin Silver (Beachwood) and senior Pat Sovacool (Lakewood) finished 2-3 in the overall stands to lead MU.
Silver mastered the Eagle Trace Golf Course surroundings in a time of 24:36.6, while Sovacool was less than three seconds behind at 24:39.1. Each of the runners was rewarded with first-team all-conference honors for his finish in the top seven.
Junior Paul Krebs (Kettering) placed 13th at 25:02.2 to garner second-team recognition, while junior Ryan Dezso (Copley) was 18th in a personal-best time of 25:10.0. Senior Brad Untrauer (McCordsville, Ind.) was the final scorer for the RedHawks with a 20th-place standing at 25:17.6.
Nine runners from each school competed with the top seven counting in the standings, but only the top five scoring points. Sophomores Michael Perry (25:22.0) and Robbie Fisher (25:23.6) were able to finish 21st and 22nd, respectively, forcing other teams to score lower, while freshman Chris Dennison (26th/25:33.8) and Adam Martin (33rd/25:56.6) did not factor in the scoring at all. However, Dennison was the first freshman in the league to cross the finish line.
"It was a solid race and we did well, especially on a grueling course," Head Coach Warren Mandrell said. "Eastern Michigan is an experience team and the meet was on its home course, so they had the advantage. We would have gotten them by a point, but they had a defending champion back in their lineup for the first time all season -- and he finished 11th."
The season continues in two weeks when the RedHawks travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The top teams from there advance to the national meet later this month in Terre Haute, Ind.
