ATHENS, Ohio - Miami University's baseball team fell to Ohio University in the final game of a three-game series Saturday evening as the Bobcats rallied to score six runs in the eighth inning to defeat the RedHawks, 7-5.
Miami (17-33; 7-17 MAC) got on the board in the first inning for the second straight game. Freshman Adam Eaton led off the frame with a single and then moved to third base on a single by junior Jordan Petraitis. With runners on the corners, junior Tommy Nurre drove a pitch to the wall in right center field that was caught at the ball, but allowed Eaton to score and give Miami a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Tyler Melling retired the first 14 Bobcat batters he faced, before a Miami error put Chris Klimko on first base with two outs in the fifth inning. On the next pitch, Gauntlett Eldemire ripped a double down the left field line for Ohio's first hit, but Klimko over-ran third base and was tagged out on the play to end the inning.
Miami took advantage of an opportunity in the sixth inning and increased its lead to 2-0. Nurre singled to lead things off and moved to second on a ground out to first base two batters later. With two outs and Nurre on second base, junior Josh Hula singled through the left side to plate Nurre and move the RedHawk margin to 2-0.
Matt Stiffler scored the first Bobcat run of the game with a solo home run in the sixth inning, but Miami added three runs in the eighth inning, increasing its lead to 5-1. Petraitis led the frame off with a walk and then moved to third base on Nurre's 20th double of the season. Junior J.D. Mynhier drew a walk to load the bases for the Red and White. After a strike out, Hula drilled a two balls, one strike fastball to the wall in left-center field, resulting in a double that scored Petraitis and Nurre and advanced Mynhier to third base. Senior Evan Armitage brought home Mynhier on a sacrifice fly to center field, upping the RedHawk lead to 5-1.
The Bobcats (25-27; 12-12 MAC) loaded the bases in the eighth inning with nobody out, bringing Zach Keen to the plate and Keen hit a grand slam to left field, tying the game at 5-5. Following the Grand Slam, Marc Krauss hit a two-run home run to center field to put Ohio on top for the first time in the game, 7-5.
The RedHawks brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but the RedHawks were unable to score as the Bobcats defeated the RedHawks, 7-5.
Hula led the RedHawks at the plate going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Miami travels to Indiana State on Tuesday, May 13, for a mid-week contest against the Sycamores before playing its final Mid-American Conference series against Kent State beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 15.
