OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's baseball team staged a comeback to tie the game at 5-5, but two RedHawk miscues in the eighth inning helped give the Indiana State Sycamores an 8-5 win over Miami at McKie Field at Hayden Park Tuesday evening.
Indiana State's David Brumagin produced all the damage for the Sycamores in the first five innings. Brumagin had three at-bats in the first five frames and drove in all five runs courtesy of a single in the first inning, a double in the third inning and a ground out in the fifth inning.
After Brumagin's two RBI single in the first inning, Miami responded with the long ball in the second inning. Freshman Adam Eaton led off the inning with a triple in the right-center field gap. After a pair of strikeouts kept Eaton at third base with two outs, freshman Jon Edgington worked a full count and drilled the 3-2 pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2.
Indiana State (12-23) held a 5-2 lead at the mid-way point before Miami struck with two more runs in the fifth inning to close within one run, 5-4. Senior Evan Armitage walked to start off the Miami fifth and on the first pitch during the next at-bat, Armitage easily stole second base to move into scoring position. A double deposited into the right-center field gap by junior Jordan Petraitis plated Armitage, cutting the Sycamore lead to 5-3. A wild pitch allowed Petraitis to advance to third base and junior Tommy Nurre made Indiana State pay for the miscue as his infield single scored Petraitis. Miami loaded the bases with two outs in the frame, but a ground out ended the scoring threat as the Sycamores took a 5-4 lead into the sixth inning.
Junior Blake Chaffee blooped a double down the right field line to start off the sixth inning and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Following a strike out, Armitage and Petraitis were hit by a pitch in consecutive at-bats to load the bases. Nurre tied the game at 5-5 with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Chaffee. Armitage and Petraitis remained on second base and first base respectively, but a ground out ended the inning.
Two Miami (12-26) errors hindered the comeback effort as Indiana State scored three runs in the eighth inning off of one hit to re-take an 8-5 lead.
The RedHawks were unable to score in the eighth or ninth innings ad Miami fell to Indiana State, 8-5.
Nurre led Miami with two hits and two RBIs, while Edgington also collected two RBIs on his first career home run.
The RedHawks travel to Cincinnati to play Xavier at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22.
