ATHENS, Ohio - The Miami University field hockey team secured a first round bye in the upcoming Mid-American Conference tournament with a 3-2 win over Ohio Sunday. The RedHawks improve to 12-6 overall, and 6-3 in the MAC. The Bobcats are 7-12 and 5-4 in the MAC.
Overall we played really well," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We executed on our corners, and that was key to gaining the victory in what was a hard fought game."
After falling behind 1-0 early, Miami got on the board at the 19:04 mark, when Christine Brightwell scored on a penalty corner off a pass from Elizabeth Gilroy. Just when it had seemed the first half had ended in a tie, the Bobcats got called for another foul in the circle, resulting in another penalty corner for the RedHawks. This time, Danielle Gaynor took the setup from Gilroy and scored to give Miami the 2-1 lead heading into the break.
Mary Hull made it 3-1 in favor of the RedHawks three minutes into the second half when she scored off the rebound of a saved shot. That turned out to be the game winner, as Ohio scored at the 54:03 mark on a penalty corner to cut the deficit to 3-2. During the last 16 minutes of the game, the Miami defense held strong, keeping the Bobcats from recording another shot on goal.
The RedHawks outshot Ohio 16-9 for the game. Kelsey Dean made two stops in net, while Hull led the team with four shots, including two on goal.
Before heading off to the MAC Tournament in two weeks, Miami will conclude the regular season with two games next weekend. The RedHawks will step out of conference on Friday, October 31, when they travel to Michigan for a 3 p.m. start against the Wolverines. Miami will then host Ball State on Sunday, November 2 at 1 p.m. That game will be senior day, and the team's six seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
