KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--In front of a boisterous contingent of Miami University fans, the RedHawk volleyball team took the No. 11 University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers to four games, falling 17-30, 30-25, 20-30 and 24-30 in the final match of the Comcast Lady Volt Classic. Miami dropped to 1-2 on the season, while Tennessee improved to 3-0.
Tennessee took the lead from the onset in the first game and never looked back, capturing the first game 30-17. The Lady Vols posted a stellar .467 hitting percentage in the first game. Miami was able to match Tennessee on the block, with each team collecting 3.0 team blocks apiece. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Schroeder posted two blocks in the first set for the RedHawks.
Kills by Schroeder, junior middle hitter Carli Reihman and junior outside hitter Jeanna Staun put Miami at an early 3-0 advantage in the second game. The Lady Vols retaliated with three straight points of their own to even the game, 3-3. The teams went back and forth until the RedHawks rattled off five straight points with help from two freshman middle hitter Hallie Hanks kills, a kill by Reihman and a block by freshman setter Andrea Atteberry and Reihman to post an 18-12 lead. Tennessee was able to close within two points, 20-18, but back-to-back service aces by Atteberry, which sandwiched a Tennessee timeout, helped Miami regain a six-point advantage, 25-19. Kills by Schroeder and Staun down the stretch spurred the RedHawks to the 30-25 game two win.
After keeping things even in the very early stages of the third game, Miami found itself trailing five points, 7-12. The RedHawks were able to pull within two points twice, the last coming off an Atteberry/Reihman block, 12-14. The Lady Vols, however, continued to pull away and went on to a 20-30 win in the third game.
Miami trailed 6-8 in the fourth game, but five straight RedHawk points, including two kills by freshman outside hitter Maria Leahy and kills by Schroeder and freshman outside/middle hitter Megan Griffin, put Miami at an 11-8 edge. Kills by Hanks, Schroeder and Reihman helped push Miami's advantage to four-points, 15-11. The Lady Vols, however, went on a 9-0 run to capture a 20-16 lead.
For Miami, Schroeder amassed 16 kills, while sophomore libero Melissa Zenz led all players with 21 digs. Atteberry added 39 assists.
The RedHawks return home next weekend to host the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Classic Sept. 1-2. Miami clashes with Western Kentucky in its home opener on Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. and faces Belmont at noon on Saturday, followed by Boston College at 7 p.m. Miami will host Meet the Team Night following the Miami/Boston College match on Saturday.
Notes: Carli Reihman was named to the All-Tournament Team ... the honor marked Reihman's fourth straight all-tournament selection after being named to all three all tournament teams in 2005 and was the fifth all-tournament team honor of her career ... it was the first time Miami went past three games this season, defeating Centenary in the opening match of the Comcast Lady Volt Classic, 3-0, and falling to Virginia in its second game at the tournament, 0-3.
