MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Miami University field hockey team's losing streak reached three games on Saturday as the RedHawks (7-11, 4-4 MAC) were downed 3-2 by the Central Michigan Chippewas (10-8, 5-3 MAC). Miami outshot CMU, 16-14, but the Chippewas held an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners, one of which led to the game-winning goal in the game's 51st minute.
Central Michigan took a 2-0 lead with a pair of goal in the game's first 25 minutes before Miami's Meghan McMurtry cut the Chippewa lead in half with her fourth goal of the season in the 26th minute. Sophomore Courtney Fretz earned the assist on the goal that sent the RedHawks into halftime trailing 2-1.
Midway through the second half, Central Michigan restored its two-goal lead with what would turn out to be the game-winning goal when Samantha Sandham converted on a penalty corner at the 50:14 mark.
Fretz immediately started to apply offensive pressure for Miami and her hard work was rewarded less than one minute after Sandham's goal as she and junior Alyssa Nye teamed up for Fretz's second goal of the year that cut the CMU lead to 3-2.
Despite outshooting the Chippewas 7-2 in the second half, the RedHawks were unable to solve CMU goalkeeper Danielle Frank again as the final score stood at 3-2.
Miami sophomore Megan Stengel made five saves in the contest but suffered the loss, while Frank turned away eight shots in the winning effort.
The RedHawks play again tomorrow at Ball State with the game slated to start at 1 p.m.
