RedHawks Topple Cardinal, 2-1, in Overtime Thriller

Aug. 27, 2005

Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Taylor Florence (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) scored twice, including the game-winner just 3:57 into overtime, as the Miami University field hockey team (1-0) downed the host Stanford University Cardinal (0-1), 2-1, in the season-opening game for both squads.

Stanford took the lead at the 7:20 mark of the first half as Jess Sutz found the back of the cage behind Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra), but that was all the offense the home team would muster on the afternoon.

Florence knotted the game midway through the first half as she banged home a rebound in the 23rd minute.

Stanford had three penalty corners in the second half, but Miami's defense stood strong, holding the Cardinal scoreless and setting the stage for Florence's overtime heroics.

With assists from sophomore Alyssa Nye (Berneville, Pa./Tulpehocken) and senior Keri von Kalinowski (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch), Florence blistered a shot from the top behind Stanford keeper Madison Bell to secure Miami's first-ever victory over Stanford. The Cardinal had been victorious in the three previous contests between the teams.

The RedHawks continue their West coast swing when they take on the University of the Pacific Tigers on Sunday. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. PT.
