Nov. 26, 2005

Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio--Concluding its season on a positive note, Miami University's volleyball team (18-13) posted a 30-24, 30-26, 26-30, 30-18 win over the University of Dayton (24-10) on Saturday afternoon at the Mid-American Conference/Atlantic 10 Challenge, hosted by Dayton. The RedHawk win halted a 19-match win streak for the Flyers.

Behind 26 digs, senior libero Suzy Wolford (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) became the first player in program history to record 500 digs in a season, ending the 2005 season with 501 digs. It was Wolford's 10th 20-plus dig performance of the season and the 15th of her career.

Dayton pulled out to a quick 3-1 lead in the first game, but Miami went on a 5-0 run, sparked by two sophomore outside hitter Kate Norris (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) kills, to take a 5-3 edge. The Flyers would come back and lead by two on four occasions, the last coming at 17-15. After an 18-18 tie, Miami rattled off five unanswered points, ignited and punctuated by kills from sophomore middle hitter Carli Reihman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and bolstered by two kills from sophomore outside hitter Jeanna Staun (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), as the RedHawks took a 23-18 lead. The teams would trade points until a UD service error and a block by Staun and freshman middle hitter Emily Schroeder (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) put the RedHawks at a 29-23 advantage. Faye Barhorst put away a kill for the Flyers, but Schroeder came right back with a kill to clinch the first game for the RedHawks, 30-24.

Trailing 6-9 in the second game, Miami went on a 6-1 run to take the 12-10 lead. Reihman hammered five kills for the RedHawks during the surge, while the additional RedHawk point came off a UD attack error. A service ace by Schroeder would put the RedHawks up 20-17, while another Reihman kill gave Miami a 22-19 cushion and a Flyer attack error made the score 24-21 in favor of the `Hawks. Kills by Dayton's Robynne Green and Jamie-Lee Richards helped knot the game, 24-24, but six Flyer miscues down the stretch catapulted Miami to the 30-26 game-two win.

Two kills from Norris, a kill by Schroeder and one from senior outside hitter Kristen Walters (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) and a block by Staun/Norris/Schroeder helped Miami to an early 5-3 lead. Dayton came right back with a 9-2 run to seize a 12-7 lead. Two kills apiece by Staun, Walters and Norris helped evaporate the Flyer lead and knotted the game, 16-16. Kills by UD's Green and Barhorst gave the Flyers a two-point cushion and the teams traded points until a 5-1 Dayton run pushed the Flyer lead to 24-19. Kills by Reihman, Norris and Walters helped pull the RedHawks within two, 23-25. A kill from Schroeder and a powerful block by the Schroeder/Norris tandem further closed the gap to one, 25-26. Dayton went on a 4-1 spurt to close out the third game and post a 30-26 win.

Miami built a quick 5-1 lead in the fourth game off two kills from Walters and one each by Schroeder and Norris. A Wolford service ace put the RedHawks up 7-2, while a Schroeder kill kept the lead at five, 8-3. Another Walters kill pushed the Miami lead to 12-6. From there Miami rolled to the 30-18 game-four win.

Miami had five players in double figures for kills: Norris (18), Reihman (17), Schroeder (15), Walters (12) and Staun (10), while Wolford and Reihman each had 20-dig efforts. Wolford led all players with 26 digs, while Reihman added 23. Clark tallied 62 assists in the winning effort, while Schroeder added five blocks and Norris tallied four blocks.

Dayton was led by Barhorst with 16 kills and six blocks.
