OXFORD, Ohio--Miami University's volleyball team swept Central Michigan University (3-15; 0-8 MAC) 30-18, 30-26 and 30-28 on Saturday evening at Millett Hall to improve to 12-7 on the year and 5-3 in Mid-American Conference play.
Two kills and two block assists by freshman middle hitter Emily Schroeder (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) helped Miami jump out to an early 8-3 lead in the first game. A block by CMU's Kelly Janisch and Alison Baker put the Chippewas within five of the RedHawks, 10-5, but Miami went on a 10-2 run, sparked by a senior setter Megan Clark (Solon, Ohio/Solon) service ace and two kills apiece from sophomore outside hitter Jeanna Staun (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and freshman outside hitter Alex Ratcliff (Champaign, Ill./Champaign Central) to post a 20-7 lead. Miami pushed its lead to as many as 14 points, 24-10, and rolled to the 30-18 game-one win.
It was Central Michigan that got out in front in the second game, posting a 14-10 lead off a Janisch service ace. Sophomore outside hitter Kate Norris (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) hammered a kill to put the score at 11-14, but CMU went on a 5-1 spurt to post a 19-12 lead. The RedHawks chipped away at the CMU lead and tied the game, 23-23. A Norris kill and a Central Michigan attack error gave Miami its first lead in the set, 25-24, and the teams would be neck-and-neck until a block by senior outside hitter Kristen Walters (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) and sophomore middle hitter Carli Reihman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), two kills by Ratcliff and a CMU attack error gave Miami the 30-26 game-two win.
The teams went back and forth in the early stages of the third game. After a 13-13 tie, CMU claimed a 17-14 edge. Miami rattled off five unanswered points off kills from Staun and Walters and another Clark service ace to post a 19-17 lead. A block by CMU's Baker and Kate Fissel tied the game, 20-20, and the Chippewas posted a 26-25 lead off a Sarah Warner service ace. However, a block by Schroeder and Norris and a kill by Norris put the RedHawks at match point, 29-27. Fissel put away a kill to keep the Chippewas alive, but a solo block by Schroeder iced the game for the RedHawks, 30-28.
Staun and Norris posted 10 kills apiece for the RedHawks, while senior libero Suzy Wolford (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) notched a match-best 12 digs. Clark posted two service aces and 26 assists, while Schroeder tallied nine kills and seven blocks (2 solo; 5 assist).
Central Michigan was led by Warner with 10 kills.
Miami returns to action next weekend, hosting Akron on Friday, Oct. 21 and Buffalo on Saturday, Oct. 22. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
