Miami Volleyball Team Sweeps Local Foe Dayton In Three Games

Sept. 14, 2004

OXFORD, Ohio--Led by double-doubles from senior outside hitter Tara Buroker (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) and freshman outside hitter Jeanna Staun (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), Miami University's volleyball swept Dayton in three games, 30-18, 30-27 and 30-28 to move to 2-4 on the season. Dayton falls to 3-3.

Bolstered by a .400 team hitting percentage in the first game, Miami surged to a 30-18 win. After a Buroker kill, the RedHawks posted a seven-point advantage, 17-10. Dayton was able to close the gap to four, 20-16, but Miami went on a 10-2 flurry with help from three kills by Buroker and a junior setter Megan Clark (Solon, Ohio/Solon) service ace to end the game.

The second game was a much closer battle. Miami opened the game with a 7-3 lead, but the Flyers came back to tie things up, 12-12. No team led by more than three points until the RedHawks rattled off six unanswered points after a 20-20 tie. Senior outside hitter Angie Zent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) tallied two kills, while Buroker and redshirt freshman Kate Norris (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) knocked down a block and Staun served up and ace during the surge. Miami held a 29-23 lead, but the Flyers chalked up four straight points to put them within two of the RedHawks, 27-29. A UD attack error, however, ended the second game in favor of Miami, 30-27.

After a 5-5 tie in the first game, two Buroker service aces and two kills from Staun helped Miami post a 10-5 lead. Dayton closed the gap to one, 20-19, and eventually knotted the game four times at 23-23, 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26. Two Flyer attack errors and another Staun kill gave the RedHawks a three-point cushion, 29-26. A kill from Dayton's Shanna Pressler and a block by Andi Moran put the Flyers within one of the RedHawks, 28-29. Norris put down the final kill to ice the game for the RedHawks, 30-28.

Buroker posted a team-best 13 kills and posted 10 digs for Miami. Staun added 12 kills a team-best 13 digs and a .417 hitting percentage, while Norris added 10 kills, four blocks and a .562 hitting percentage.
