OXFORD, Ohio -- In its first appearance at home since the beginning of the 2004 season, the Miami field hockey team impressed a copius and energized Red and White crowd with a 3-0 blanking of Appalachian State (2-4) in its home opener. Senior Meredith Lee (San Jose, Calif.) scored the RedHawk's first two goals to help lead her team to its third win of the season.
Lee got Miami on the board early in the first with her second goal of the season at 14:10. On one of its 10 penalty corners, sophomore Danielle Perrecone (Carlsbad, Calif.) zipped the ball towards the right post where Lee was patiently waiting to make the deflection into the goal.
After nearly 10 minutes had past since Lee's first goal she struck again at 24:57 to give Miami a 2-0 lead. This time Lee received a pass from freshman Alyssa Nye (Bernville, Pa.) and promptly one-timed a shot past ASU goalie Kate Ryno.
A mere 29 seconds later and Miami had upped its lead to 3-0 when Nye put herself on the scoresheet. Soon after ASU made its pass back, Nye intercepted a pass and rifled it off the goalie's pads into the net for her second marker of the season. The goal gave the RedHawks a 3-0 lead that they held into the break.
The Mountaineers came out in the second half with a burst of energy and quickly found themselves with a penalty corner. Lizzie Watson fired a shot from the top of the circle which was stopped by a sprawling Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif.) to keep ASU off the board. It was one of only two saves that Orr needed in order to record her second shutout of 2004 and fourth of her career.
Miami held on to the shutout as neither team was able to mount much of an attack in the second half. The RedHawks held the advantage in both shots, 17-4, as well as penalty corners, 10-4. ASU's goalie Ryno made seven saves in the defeat.
The RedHawks even their record at 3-3 with the victory and play next at Saint Louis on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
