OXFORD, Ohio-Miami University head women's basketball coach Maria Fantanarosa has announced the hiring of Heather Oesterle as an assistant coach with the RedHawk women's basketball program. Oesterle replaces former Miami assistant Nicole Like, who accepted a similar position at her alma mater, Xavier University, earlier this summer.
Oesterle comes to Miami after serving one season as a volunteer assistant coach for a Stanford University program that finished the season 27-5 and ranked among the Top 15 in the nation. Prior to her stint with the Cardinal, Oesterle was a four-year contributor for the University of Michigan women's basketball team. Oesterle served as the team captain in 2001-02 and also was honored with the program's Wolverine Leadership Award.
"Heather had a great career as a player at Michigan and has already gained valuable coaching experience with one of the country's premier programs at Stanford," Fantanarosa said. "She's very eager and enthusiastic, and I look forward to working with a young coach that possesses that kind of energy."
A native of Mason, Mich., where she was a Detroit Free Press Class A All-State selection as a high school senior, Oesterle set the Mason High School career scoring record with 1,451 points during her prep career. At Michigan, Oesterle, a 6-foot forward, helped the Wolverines to a four-year record of 76-45 (.628) that included two appearances each in the NCAA and the WNIT postseason tournaments.
