BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The Miami field hockey team (0-1) dropped its season opener on Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 loss at Indiana (2-0). Even though freshman goalie Kerri Matthews (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) suffered the defeat, she made 10 saves in her collegiate debut.
The Hoosiers rattled off four goals in the first period while out shooting the Red and White, 12-1. IU's Kayla Bashore scored her second and third goals of the season, respectively, and was the only Hoosier with multiple goals. Senior Angie Snedden (Sarnia, Ontario) led the RedHawks with two shots on goal.
Matthews made five saves in each period. Indiana maintained a 28-4 shot and 7-3 penalty-corner advantage in the contest.
Miami opens its home schedule next weekend, Sept. 6, as it prepares for a 1 p.m. game against Radford.
