DAYTON, Ohio-Miami University's volleyball team (3-5) dropped a three-game match at the University of Dayton (5-2) on Tuesday night. The Flyers posted 30-28, 32-30 and 30-21 wins.
After jumping out to a quick 7-2 advantage, capped by a service ace from senior outside hitter Kelly McCullough (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), Miami allowed Dayton to return the favor and take a one-point edge, 11-10, off a 9-2 run, which ended with three service aces by UD's Christy Utnage and a Flyer block. The Flyers increased their lead to four, 18-14, but Miami crept back to tie the set, 19-19, bolstered by a block and kill from senior middle hitter Jennifer Eaton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy). The two teams went back and forth until Dayton outscored Miami 4-1 late in the game to take the 27-24 lead and eventually capture the 30-28 win in the first game.
Again Miami posted an early lead in the second game, owning a 6-2 edge. The RedHawks posted their greatest lead, 12-6, but persistently Dayton chipped away at the Miami lead to take its first lead of the game, 28-27. Dayton went on to take the second game 30-32.
In the third game, the Flyers took control from the onset and rolled from there to post a 30-21 win.
Junior middle hitter Susan Poll (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood) paced the RedHawks with nine kills, while McCullough tallied three service aces and Eaton notched four blocks.
Miami travels to the TCU Invitational this weekend and will face Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, before playing San Jose State and TCU on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
