Miami Downs IPFW in Miami Classic; Washington Tops Delaware

OXFORD, Ohio - Outscoring IPFW (0-1) 13-5 down the stretch in the fourth game, Miami University's volleyball team (1-0) battled back from a 17-23 deficit to capture the game and the match in the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Classic. Washington (1-0) topped Delaware (0-1) in three games in the opening match of the tournament.

MIAMI 3, IPFW 1
After inching out a 30-26 win in the first game, the RedHawks came out and captured a 30-17 win to take a two-game lead in the match. The Mastodons rebounded to post a 30-25 game-three win. In the fourth game, IPFW built a 23-17 lead, but Miami regained composure to outscore the Mastodons 13-5 and take the fourth game and the match 30-28.

Sophomore outside hitter Tara Buroker (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) had a career night, posting a career-best 29 digs, 17 kills and a .385 hitting percentage. All three led the RedHawks. Fifteen of Buroker's digs game in the first game. Freshman setter Megan Clark (Solon, Ohio/Solon) turned in a solid performance in her RedHawk debut with 42 assists, five digs, two blocks and three kills. Senior middle hitter Jennifer Eaton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) tallied 13 digs and eight blocks, while junior middle hitter Susan Poll (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood) added 13 kills, seven digs and three blocks. Senior outside hitters Kelly McCullough (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Erika Eagan (Bloomington, Ill./Tri-Valley) recorded 12 kills and five blocks, and 10 kills and 20 digs, respectively.

For IPFW, freshman middle hitter Fabiana Souza compiled a team-best 18 kills, while junior middle hitter Kirsta Solberg added 11 kills, 21 digs and four service aces. Junior libero Sarah Leffers led the team with 22 digs, while sophomore setter Lindi Bankowski added 18 digs and 35 assists.

WASHINGTON 3, DELAWARE 0
The Huskies produced commanding 30-16 and 30-17 wins in the first two games and followed with a 30-23 win in the third game to capture the match.

For the Huskies, sophomore outside hitter Sonja Tomasevic recorded a team-best 11 kills, nine digs and .450 hitting percentage. Senior setter Gretchen Maurer and sophomore middle hitter Egan Metcalf each had four blocks. The Huskies' dominant serve produced 12 service aces to Delaware's 0. Sophomore outside hitter Kaitlin Leck and Maurer each tallied three service aces, while sophomore middle hitter Alexis McDonald and senior outside hitter Paige Benjamin recorded two apiece. As a team, Washington hit .427 for the match with five players hitting at or above .450.

Junior setter Allison Hunter compiled a team-best seven digs and 12 assists for the Fightin' Blue Hens.

Tournament action continues on Saturday in Millett Hall. Admission to all matches is free. Saturday's schedule follows:
