OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's volleyball team topped Buffalo (5-22, 0-17 MAC) in three games 30-19, 30-27 and 30-20 to up its record to 13-11 overall and 10-7 in the Mid-American Conference.
Aces were wild to start the first game. Three service aces and a service error started things off, with Lee Ann Karr (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) collecting two aces to give Miami a quick 3-1 lead. The RedHawks extended their lead to 9-2, capped by a Jennifer Eaton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) service ace. Buffalo rattled off four straight points to pull within five, 14-19, but was unable to overcome the RedHawk advantage as Miami rolled to a 30-19 triumph in the first game.
Despite trailing the Bulls 10-17, Miami rebounded to claim the second game 30-27. A service ace by Robyn Byrnes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), a big block by Eaton and McCullough and several Bull miscues helped Miami back into the game. The RedHawks took a 28-27 lead off a pair of Buffalo attack errors. An Eaton kill gave the RedHawks their 29th point, while a block by Eaton and Erika Eagan (Bloomington, Ill./Tri-Valley) iced the game.
The third game was more of a nip-and-tuck battle through the early stages. Miami took a 17-9 lead and never looked back as it captured the third game 30-20.
McCullough paced the RedHawks with 12 kill, seven digs, three blocks and a .370 hitting percentage. Eaton notched eight kills and five blocks for the RedHawks, while Susan Poll (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood) tallied nine kills.
Miami returns to action Saturday night in its final regular-season match, hosting Marshall at 7 p.m. A Miami win will secure a berth in the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the RedHawks.
