Miami Goes Undefeated at ISTAP Collegiate Cup With 3-0 Win Over Bulldogs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Miami University volleyball team (8-1) rolled past South Carolina State (2-8) in three sets to conclude its time in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup on Saturday afternoon.
Molly Creech led the match with 10 kills, and Holland Van Deusen totaled 20 assists to lead all players, while Grace Kreutz poured in a match-high six service aces. Defensively, Kreutz recorded the most digs (11) and Lydia Michelin put down the most blocks (six).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Two kills and a service ace from Kreutz pushed the RedHawks to an early 7-3 lead in the first set. A block from Sophia Stallworth and Raegan Lantz, along with two kills from Chelsea Williams, helped Miami hold on to a 13-8 advantage. Leading 13-10, the Red and White went on a 6-0 run to jump ahead 19-10. Numerous errors, a pair of blocks from Lantz and a kill from Lantz helped seal the first set 25-13.
- A rush of kills from Lauren Coyne, Kreutz and Creech gave Miami a 6-5 edge over the Bulldogs in the second set. Michelin went on to add three kills to help Miami hold on to a 10-8 lead. Up 10-9, a service ace from Rachel Morgan and a solo block from Lantz put the RedHawks in control of the set at 15-9. A kill and service ace from Lantz and another kill from Michelin put the score at 20-13. Back-to-back kills from Creech and Coyne gave Miami a 25-18 win in the second set.
- Kreutz fueled the Miami offense at the opening of the third set, as she put down three service aces to hand Miami an early 5-0 lead. Numerous kills from the RedHawks, multiple errors from South Carolina State and a service ace from Morgan gave Miami a double-digit lead at 14-4. Three consecutive kills and a block from Michelin extended the scoring gap to 18-5. Kreutz added her sixth service ace of the match to make it 23-7, and Kendall Bosse used a soft touch on an attack to float the ball over the net for a kill, giving the RedHawks a 25-11 third-set victory.
NOTES:
- Miami had a .400 hitting percentage in comparison to .056 by South Carolina State.
- The RedHawks put down 42 kills and held the Bulldogs to 26.
- The Red and White had 11 blocks versus three from South Carolina State.
- Miami served 10 aces, whereas South Carolina State served just two.
UP NEXT:
The Red and White return to the court for a pair of home-and-away matches against Northern Kentucky on Sept. 18-19. The RedHawks will host the Norse on Friday, Sept. 18 and then follow this up by going south to Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 19.
