RedHawks Down Broncos, 11-9

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Ryan Novak put Miami ahead early, swinging for the fences after Marcus Dierks led off with a walk to create a two-run advantage for Miami in the top of the first. Zac Sohosky took the mound for the RedHawks in the bottom of the first. Western Michigan pulled within one run after a walk and a wild pitch put a runner on second base, setting the batter up for an RBI single to center field.
- Miami was held scoreless in the second after Christopher Roa was narrowly caught stealing. The Broncos started the bottom of the second with two hits but stranded both runners after Sohosky threw a strikeout and Evan Appelwick and Ignacio Gonzalez worked together to turn a double play.
- After a scoreless top of the third, Miami turned a second double play , this time a 6-4-3 double play, with one out to escape the third inning still ahead 2-1.
- Novak led off the fourth inning with his second home run of the day, a shot down the left-field line just over the wall to make the score 3-1. After two quick outs, Roa singled up the middle and Diego Cruz singled to left field. Dominic Krupinski walked, loading the bases with zero outs. Dierks took a walk on a full count to add another run to the lead. Evan Appelwick added to his Miami-record career RBI count, driving Cruz home with an infield single to force a pitching change. In the bottom of the fourth, the Broncos brought one aboard via a leadoff walk, but Sohosky sent the next three batters down to end the inning.
- Miami rallied again in the top of the fifth, starting with a no-out walk from Novak. Gonzalez and Carson Raether hit back-to-back singles to fill the bases. With one out, Cruz singled to left-center to bring Novak around for his third run of the day. With two outs, excellent baserunning by Miami allowed all three baserunners to score on an infield single by Dierks. In the bottom of the inning, Miami turned their third inning-ending double play of the game to hold the 9-1 lead.
- Western Michigan loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no outs via two back-to-back singles and a walk. The Broncos brought two runs home with a double down the right-field line to pull within six runs, 9-3. A wild pitch and a single each scored one more run to pull within four runs. A double to left field sealed a six-run inning for the Broncos and put them back within two runs, 9-7, headed into the seventh inning.
- Roa led off the top of the seventh with a single to right field and stole second base, setting up Krupinski for an RBI single to left to make it a 10-7 ballgame. In the bottom of the seventh, the Broncos led off with a single and put another runner on with an HBP. A sac fly scored a run to make it 10-8. Austin Berggren came in to pitch in relief and recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
- In the top of the eighth inning, Novak and Gonzalez both got on base after being walked. Cruz singled through the right side of the field to advance Gonzalez to second and score Novak at 11-8. Krup walked to load the bases before a strikeout ended the top of the eighth inning. A single and a double in the bottom of the eighth inning resulted in the Broncos cutting their deficit to 11-9. Berggren managed to end the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
- The Red and White did not score in the top of the ninth inning, but Berggren sealed an 11-9 victory with three consecutive strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- Dierks went 2-for-4 with a run, three SB and four RBI.
- Novak went 3-for-4 with one SB, two HR, three RBI and four runs.
- Roa went 2-for-4 with two runs.
- Cruz went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
- In 2.1 innings of action, Berggren held the Broncos to two hits and one run, while recording six strikeouts.
- Miami outhit WMU 13 to 11.
- The RedHawks walked 11 times and gave up five walks.
- Miami left 11 on base and WMU left nine on base.
- Miami had one error compared to two errors from Western Michigan.

Miami will compete in game two of the three-game series against Western Michigan in Kalamzaoo on Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
