Miami Sweeps Southern in Doubleheader

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE):
- Each team recorded one hit in the first inning, but the game remained scoreless. In the top of the second, Miami loaded the bases with three walks but was unable to drive anyone home.
- The RedHawks leapt to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Appelwick took an HBP and scored on an RBI double from Ryan Novak, who then scored on a groundout. Zac Sohosky recorded three straight outs to round out the bottom of the third.
- The RedHawks added two more runs in the fourth inning. Matthew Buffington led off with a walk and advanced when Jamie Rasmussen walked. Each advanced on a groundout, and a single by Dominic Krupinski scored both runs.
- Southern scored its first runs in the bottom of the fifth on one hit and three stolen bags to slice the deficit in half to 4-2.
- Miami answered with four runs in the sixth. Buffington singled and advanced twice on two wild pitches, setting up Marcus Dierks for an RBI single. Krupinski came aboard via walk, and Appelwick hit his 40th career home run with the RedHawks to make it an 8-2 contest.
- The Jaguars scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh on zero hits.
- A solo homer by Krupinski made it 9-3 in favor of the RedHawks in the top of the eighth.
- Miami put an exclamation mark on a 10-3 win in the ninth as Buffington singled to score Keenan Proctor, who had taken an HBP and advanced on a wild pitch.
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME ONE):
- Krupinski went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs and two walks.
- Appelwick went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. His three-run homer marks the 40th of his career at Miami.
- Buffington 2-for-3 with two runs and two walks.
- Sohosky pitched five full innings and held the Jaguars to four hits and one walk. He struck out five batters.
- Jared Eisiminger pitched three scoreless innings and struck out four batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO):
- Miami took a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Diego Cruz singled and advanced twice, and Carson Raether took an HBP, putting runners at the corners. Krupinski doubled to score both runners, and Appelwick crushed another homer to add two RBIs to his stat sheet.
- The RedHawks extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Jake Vrlak walked, and Ignacio Gonzalez singled to put Vrlak on second. A double from Cruz sent Vrlak home.
- A double, HBP, and triple for the Jaguars put Southern on the board with two runs.
- Miami extended their scoring streak with three runs in the fifth. Krupinski came up with a leadoff single and advanced on an Appelwick HBP. Novak walked to load the bases, and a fielder's choice scored two runs. Vrlak cleared the bases with a long ball to make it 8-1.
- Raether singled and stole two bags to start the sixth. Appelwick walked, and a sac fly by Novak and a single by Hayden Christiansen scored two runners to extend the lead to nine runs, 11-1.
- Ryder Kirtley earned his first base as a RedHawk via walk in the top of the seventh and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on an error that sent Raether to first. Krupinski walked, and pinch hitter Vrlak hammered a three-RBI home run to make it 15-2.
- Alex Gay closed out the game on the mound for the RedHawks, striking out the last two batters faced to secure the Miami sweep.
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME TWO):
- Rather went 1-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
- Krupinski went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.
- Appelwick went 1-for-2 with three runs, two RBIs and a walk.
- Vrlak went 2-for-4 with three runs and five RBIs.
- Cruz went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
UP NEXT: Miami will play four games in Port Charlotte, Florida, as a part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic tournament. Their first game is scheduled for Friday, February 20 at 3 p.m.
