On Monday morning, D1 Softball Announced its watch list for the top-100 freshman in the country, which included Miami's Leila Mathis. The freshman was one of eight non-Power-4 programs on the list.
"Being named to the D1 Softball Top 100 Freshman Watch List is a well-deserved honor for Leila Mathis," said head coach Mandy Gardner-Colegate. "She is a tremendous young ball player who has developed significantly over the fall. Leila approaches preparation and competition with a level of maturity beyond her years, both on and off the field. She consistently challenged herself in practice and in the weight room, and we look forward to seeing her continued growth and contributions this spring."
Mathis graduated from George Walton Academy, located in Monroe, Ga. She earned all-state accolades as a junior and senior and this past season was named Regional Player of the Year after posting a .577 batting average with 12 home runs and 56 RBI.
As a junior she was named her conference's Defensive Player of the Year, while recording a .468 batting average to go along with eight home runs and 31 RBI.
She owns the school record for career and single-season home runs and added all-state honors in basketball, track and lacrosse.
Mathis and the entire RedHawk softball team open the season on Feb. 6 versus Kentucky in San Diego, Calif.
