Hard-Hitting RedHawks Take Two over Buffalo

OXFORD, Ohio – On a rainy Saturday afternoon the Miami University softball team defeated the University at Buffalo in both games of their doubleheader. In game one phenomenal pitching from Madilyn Reeves, including a season high 11 strikeouts, helped the RedHawks to a 8-0 victory in six innings. In game two it was the offense, including a four RBI game from Mckenna Campbell and a three RBI game from Chloe Parks, that pushed the Red and White to a 10-2 win in five innings. The RedHawks improve to 30-23 on the season (19-7 Mid-American Conference). Buffalo drops to 17-32 (10-16 MAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • Ella Carter got the RedHawks started in the bottom of the second with a 1-0 lead when she homered down the left field line.
  • Erin Pinter and Holly Merritt performed a double steal later that inning that allowed Merritt to take home and Pinter to take second, doubling the lead to 2-0.
  • Danitza Hernandez followed that up with a double off the right field wall that pushed Pinter across home and made it a 3-0 game.
  • In the bottom of the third, Carter hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kaylee Oh and extended the RedHawks' lead to 4-0.
  • Madie Patton blasted a three-run homer over center field in the bottom of the sixth, also scoring Merritt and Jenna Golembiewski. Hernandez followed that up with a solo home run to walk it off 8-0.
 
NOTES:
  • Hernandez went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Eight RedHawks had hits, seven scored runs, and three had RBI.
  • Reeves went the complete game, striking out 11, a season high, and allowing just six hits. This is her 20th win of the season.
  • The RedHawks had five extra-base hits in the game.
  • Miami baserunners stole four bases, tying the season high.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Campbell hit a rocket up the middle in the bottom of the first to bring home Shelby Kunkel and give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead.
  • Kunkel drove Pinter home in the bottom of the second on a RBI single to double the RedHawk lead to 2-0.
  • Parks followed that up with a hit up the middle that scored Kunkel and Hernandez, increasing the difference to 4-0.
  • Still not done in that inning, Campbell smashed a homer over left-center to also bring home Parks and make it a 6-0 game.
  • The Bulls got their first run of the day on a RBI double in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 6-1.
  • Hernandez hit a sac fly in the bottom of the third that allowed Merritt to tag up and take home, extending the lead to 7-1.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Bulls got one more run on a sac fly to cut the difference to 7-2.
  • Parks crossed home in the bottom of the fourth on a throwing error to extend the Red and White's lead to 8-2.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Kunkel crossed home on a single from Parks. Campbell followed that up with a RBI single to allow Oh to score and walk it off 10-2.
 
NOTES:
  • Parks and Campbell each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Merritt and Kunkel each went 2-for-3.
  • The RedHawks had four extra base hits in the game, totaling nine on the day, across 11 innings.
  • Kunkel had three stolen bases in the game, adding to Miami's total of seven on the day.
  • Campbell had four RBI on the day; Parks had three.
  • Reeves started the game in the circle, going three innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out one.
  • Léa Chevrier closed the game out on the bump, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
  • On the day, Miami pitching gave up just one earned run and nine hits.
