Miami Defeats Samford 7-1 With Big Eighth Inning

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.–  Miami defeated Samford 7-1 Saturday after four scoreless innings from Clayton Burke. Ryan Novak hit a home run for the RedHawks, his seventh of the season. The RedHawks move to 25-19 with the win while the Bulldogs fall to 23-21.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Cooper Katskee recorded four strikeouts in the first two innings.
  • Ryan Novak put the RedHawks on the board with a solo home run in the top of the third to make it 1-0.
  • Samford tied the game at 1-1 with two doubles in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Miami broke the game open in the top of the eighth, scoring five runs. Ryan Novak singled in the leadoff spot and advanced to third as Anthony Zarlingo doubled. Novak scored on a wild pitch and Evan Appelwick walked. David Novak singled, scoring one run, and three walks sent Appelwick and David Novak in to score. Dillon Baker hit a sac fly to make it 6-1.
  • The RedHawks added one last run in the bottom of the ninth. David Novak walked and Dominic Krupinski doubled. Keenan Proctor took an HBP and a wild pitch scored Novak to cap off a 7-1 victory.
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
  • Ryan Novak went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
  • David Novak went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
  • Krupinski went 2-for-3 with a run.
  • Katskee pitched five innings, striking out nine batters.
  • Burke pitched four innings, striking out four batters and giving up no runs.
