RedHawks Fall to Cardinals After Difficult Seventh Inning

MUNCIE, Ind. – The RedHawks dropped a 14-9 contest to Ball State Friday after giving up eight runs in the seventh inning. Anthony Zarlingo had four hits during the game and came around to score twice, and Evan Appelwick hit two home runs. Miami falls to 31-21 with the loss (22-7 MAC) while the Cardinals improve to 35-18 (21-7 MAC).  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The RedHawks scored in the top of the first on an HBP. Ryan Novak walked, Zarlingo singled and Appelwick walked to load the bases. David Novak took an HBP to force a 1-0 lead.
  • Ball State tied the game in the bottom of the second with a solo home run.
  • Appelwick took the lead back for Miami in the third. Zarlingo singled to centerfield and Appelwick hit a two-run bomb to right field.
  • The Cardinals hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to pull back ahead 4-3.
  • Miami tied the ballgame in the fifth. Zarlingo hammered a homer to right field in the leadoff spot.
  • Ball State broke the tie in the sixth, scoring after a triple and a sac fly to make it 5-4.
  • The RedHawks pulled back in front with three runs in the top of the seventh. Ryan Novak hit a leadoff double and Appelwick hit a go-ahead two-run homer to make it 6-5. David Novak reached first on an error and advanced on a single by Dominic Krupinski. Ty Batusich singled to score David Novak and make it 7-5.
  • The Cardinals scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a commanding 13-7 lead. Miami gave up seven hits, including three home runs, during the inning.
  • Blake Buzzeo and Ryan Novak walked in the eighth, and Zarlingo doubled to left-center to cut the lead to 13-8.
  • Ball State answered with one run on a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Krupinski doubled to start the ninth, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 14-9, but the RedHawks were able to complete the comeback.
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
  • Zarlingo went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs.
  • Appelwick went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs.
  • Krupinski went 2-for-4 with one run.
 
UP NEXT: The RedHawks will wrap up their series against Ball State and their regular season schedule tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
