OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University synchronized skating program announced its annual awards for the 2024-25 season this spring. The senior team and collegiate team each recognized an outstanding skater, senior of the year, rookie of the year, most improved skater and spirit award, in addition to the program's Karin Sherr Outstanding Student-Athlete Award. As announced last March, the RedHawks' senior of the year awards are now named in honor of former head coach Carla DeGirolamo and the program's team spirit awards are named for former assistant Lee Ann Shoker.
The Karin Sherr Outstanding Student-Athlete Award was presented to senior Melissa Marchetti, a four-year member of Miami's senior team. The Karin Sherr Outstanding Student-Athlete embodies a true commitment to excellence both on and off the ice. This student-athlete demonstrates excellence in the core values of Miami Varsity Synchronized Skating in their daily lives – it is "who they are," not just "what they do." This student-athlete is embracing the full collegiate experience and demonstrates continuous growth. It is an individual who displays great discipline, commitment, and passion in the core pillars of education: academics, athletics, community service, self development, team. This award is open to varsity synchronized skaters and is voted upon by all members of the program and program support staff.
In head coach Katey Nyquist and assistant coach Sammie Levine's first season, the RedHawk collegiate team captured the program's fourth consecutive and 23rd all-time national title. Miami's senior team represented the United States as Team USA at two events during the regular season and capped its season with a silver medal at the U.S. Championships, posting a season-high score of 210.15.
