OXFORD, Ohio – On Tuesday afternoon the Miami University softball team won both games of the doubleheader against the University of Toledo. In game one the RedHawks took down the Rockets 9-1 and in game two the final score was 9-3. The RedHawks move to 21-15 on the season (11-0 Mid-American Conference). The Rockets drop to 8-22 (3-8 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- In the top of the first, Toledo took a 1-0 lead on a double steal where the RedHawks secured the out at second.
- Ella Carter put the RedHawks on the board with a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run homer over dead center that also scored Mckenna Campbell and Danitza Hernandez.
- In that same inning Shelby Kunkel hit a RBI single to score Madie Patton and push the lead to 4-1.
- Jenna Golembiewski followed that up with the second three-run homer of the inning. She blasted one over left to also score Kunkel and Kaylee Oh, upping the lead to 7-1.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Hernandez made it a 8-1 game with a RBI double that scored Erin Pinter.
- Pinter hit a RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to score Golembiewski and end the game with a 9-1 score.
NOTES:
- Carter went 3-for-3 at the plate. Golembiewski went 3-for-4.
- Madilyn Reeves pitched the complete game in the circle, allowing just one run and two hits. She struck out nine.
- The RedHawks had four extra-base hits in the game, two doubles and two homers.
- Golembiewski and Carter each had three RBI.
- Eight RedHawks had hits and eight scored runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- In the bottom of the first, a fielder's choice followed by an error allowed Oh and Kunkel to cross home and take a 2-0 lead.
- Pinter followed that up with a RBI single that allowed Campbell to cross home and increase the lead to 3-0.
- Golembiewski hit her second three-run homer of the day in the bottom of the second, also scoring Kunkel and Oh to extend the lead to 6-0.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Hernandez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Campbell. A wild pitch then pushed Pinter across home to increase the Red and White's lead to 8-0.
- The Rockets got on the board in the top of the fifth with a two-run homer, cutting the deficit to 8-2.
- A double from Chloe Parks in the bottom of the fifth allowed Kunkel to cross home and push the lead to 9-2.
- In the top of the seventh, the Rockets scored one more on a RBI double, but they could not come back from the deficit, giving the RedHawks the 9-3 win.
NOTES:
- Parks and Carter each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Pinter went 2-for-4 at the plate.
- Golembiewski had three RBI in the game.
- Six RedHawks had hits, five scored runs.
- Reeves pitched the complete game, allowing just six hits and three runs. She struck out five.
UP NEXT: The RedHawks will face Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich. this weekend with the first pitch of game one slated for April 5 at 1 p.m.
