OXFORD, Ohio – Miami swept the Northern Illinois Huskies Sunday in an 18-8 seven-inning game. Five different RedHawks recorded multiple hits during the contest. Miami improves to 10-9 (5-1 MAC) with the win while NIU falls to 7-10 (1-5 MAC) with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Austin Berggren took the mound for the RedHawks in the top of the first and recorded three straight outs, including two strikeouts.
- Dillon Baker led off the bottom of the first for Miami, homering on the very first pitch to put Miami ahead 1-0.
- NIU managed an inside-the-park home run in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1.
- Berggren recorded three strikeouts in the bottom of the second.
- The RedHawks took a 9-1 lead in the bottom of the second with six singles and a home run. Evan Appelwick led off for Miami with a single. With zero outs, Dominic Krupinski singled, and Ryan Novak drove Appelwick home with a single to left field. Blake Buzzeo added to the streak with another single. He advanced on a throwing error that scored Krupinski. Dom Magliocca took an HBP to load the bases.
- With two outs, another run scored as Ty Btausich hit into a fielder's choice. Anthony Zarlingo singled to drive in Miami's fifth run of the game. David Novak singled to score Batusich. Appelwick capped off the eight-run, seven-hit second inning for Miami with a more than 400-foot three-run home run to center field.
- NIU tacked on four runs in the bottom of the third to make it 9-5. The runs came after a double, walk, RBI single, and three-run home run.
- Miami scored four more to make it 13-5 in the bottom of the third. Buzzeo walked and advanced on an error. Baker drove him in with a triple to left center. Batusich doubled and advanced on an error to send Baker home. An error in the infield sent home two more.
- Magliocca added an insurance run for the RedHawks in the bottom of the fourth. Krupinski walked and Buzzeo singled to center. Magliocca came up with a bunt single to score Krupinski.
- NIU's Gavin Baldwin hit his third home run of the day to bring the Huskies within eight runs, 14-6.
- The Huskies added two runs in the top of the sixth on a walk, a double and a single.
- Krupisnki doubled in the bottom of the sixth, and a walk and an HBP loaded the bases. Batusich took an HBP to force in one run and make it 15-8.
- Ryan Novak hit a home run with two aboard from walks in the bottom of the seventh. This enacted the Sunday run-rule and gave Miami an 18-8 win in seven innings.

- Krupinski went 2-for-3 with three runs.
- Ryan Novak went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs.

Miami will travel to Columbus Tuesday to face Ohio State for a single game starting at 3 p.m. The RedHawks will resume conference play with a road series against Eastern Michigan starting Friday, March 21.
