
RedHawks Top ASU 12-4; Fall to Minnesota 4-3

TEMPE, Ariz. – On Saturday night the Miami University softball team faced off against the University of Minnesota and Arizona State University. In game one, the RedHawks fell to the Golden Gophers 4-3 in extra innings. Minnesota moves to 1-2 on the season. In game two, the RedHawks routed Arizona State University 12-4 with the help of Shelby Kunkel's two multi-run home runs. The Sun Devils move to 2-1 on the season. The RedHawks move to 1-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- In the bottom of the second, a solo homer put the Golden Gophers on the board first, 1-0.
- A double from Chloe Parks in the top of the third allowed Kaylee Oh to score and tie the game at 1-1.
- A wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth allowed another run to cross for the Gophers, giving them a 2-1 lead.
- Jenna Golembiewski smashed a two-run homer over left field in the top of the fifth that also scored Kunkel to give the RedHawks their first lead of the game, 3-2.
- The Gophers tied it up 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice bunt.
- The sixth and seventh innings were scoreless, sending the game into extra innings.
- In the bottom of the eighth, the Gophers hit a RBI single, allowing them to take the game 4-3.
NOTES (GAME 1):
- Nathalie Hagle made her first collegiate appearance.
- Golembiewski and Holly Merritt each went 2-for-4 at the plate.
- Golembiewski also notched two RBI.
- Kunkel and Parks each recorded a double.
- Léa Chevrier pitched the complete game, striking out two, and allowing just seven hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- In the bottom of the first, a RBI double from the Sun Devils put ASU ahead 1-0.
- Kunkel lined one up the middle in the top of the third to score Oh. Parks then followed that up with a double hit down the left field line to score Kunkel and put the RedHawks on top 2-1.
- Still in the third, a single from Merritt, paired with an error, allowed Golembiewski and Parks to score, upping the lead to 4-1.
- In the bottom of the third, a two-run home run from ASU shortened the gap to 4-3.
- But in the top of the fourth, the RedHawks answered with a three-run homer from Kunkel over left field that also scored Oh and Sydney Gilbert. This pushed the RedHawk lead to 7-3.
- Still in the fourth, a sac groundout from Merritt allowed Parks to cross the plate, making it a 8-3 game.
- Extending the top of the fourth further, Mckenna Campbell hit a single to right field that, with the help of an error, allowed both Erin Pinter and Kari Krueger to score, increasing the deficit to 10-3.
- A solo homer from ASU in the bottom of the fourth cut the difference to 10-4.
- Kunkel homered for the second time in the game in the top of the seventh, also scoring Danitza Hernandez, to push the Miami lead to 12-4. They held this lead through the remainder of the game to claim Miami's first win of the season.
NOTES (GAME 2):
- Pinter made her first appearance as a RedHawk.
- Kunkel went 4-for-5 at the plate with two homers, notching six RBI.
- Oh went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double.
- Madilyn Reeves pitched the complete game, allowing just nine hits and striking out five.
- Eight different RedHawks scored runs, and seven different RedHawks had hits.
- With this win, the RedHawks claim the Sun Devil's first loss of the season.
