RedHawks Drop 7-6 Extra Innings Contest to Utah

TEMPE, Ariz. – On Sunday afternoon the Miami University softball team battled the University of Utah in an extra-innings game that eventually ended in the RedHawks falling to the Utes 7-6. Utah moves to 2-2 on the season. The RedHawks fall to 1-4.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the top of the second, a RBI double from the Utes allowed them to get on the board first, 1-0.
  • An error in the bottom of the third allowed Mckenna Campbell to score, tying the game 1-1.
  • Chloe Parks followed that up with a 2 RBI double that scored Shelby Kunkel and Kaylee Oh, giving the RedHawks a 3-1 lead.
  • The fourth and fifth innings were quiet.
  • In the top of the sixth, a RBI single from Utah cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • A RBI single, error, and wild pitch scored two for the Utes in the top of the seventh, giving them a 5-3 lead. 
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the RedHawks capitalized on a pair of errors, allowing both Campbell and Ella Carter to score, tying the game at 5-5.
  • The game remained tied through the end of the seventh, sending it into extra innings.
  • The Utes scored in the top of the eighth on a RBI single to take a 6-5 lead.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, the RedHawks answered via a RBI single to left field from Holly Merritt that scored Jenna Golembiewski and tied the game up once more at 6-6.
  • A sacrifice fly from the Utes in the top of the ninth managed to get another run across, granting them a 7-6 lead, which they held through the remainder of the game.
 
NOTES:
  • Merritt and Oh went 2-for-4 at the plate. Parks went 2-for-5, with two doubles.
  • Parks also notched two RBI.
  • Madilyn Reeves went the full nine innings in the circle, striking out three and earning a 3.76 ERA. She gave up just two extra base hits.
  • Seven RedHawks had four or more at-bats.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks head to Columbia, SC next weekend to play in the Carolina Classic. Their first game is Friday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. against Appalachian State University.
